WW1 was devastating to many countries around the world economically, but that was only a small problem. Many young soldiers had gone through so much in little time that they lost so much. These boys did not know what to do with their lives after the war. All Quiet on the Western Front by Erich Remarque was a fantastic book surrounding Paul Baumer and his experience. Within the text, Three major themes were present. One theme was the loss of innocence where boys were put into war and went through more than a lifetime of death and destruction. Another theme was the the questioning of authority where adults that were once trusted, were now untrustable. The last theme was the brutality of war where innocent soldiers go through so much brutality
One point of evidence includes a quote from chapter 8 on page 195. It reads, “A word of command has made these silent figures our enemies; a word of command might transform them into our friends." This quote gives of evidence to point out that the soldiers were not making choices in who was right or wrong, they were given orders, and had to carry them out. Another quote points out this type of thinking in chapter 9. "It is queer, when one thinks about it," goes on Kropp, "we are here to protect our fatherland. And the French are over there to protect their fatherland. Now who is in the right?" This also leads to the fact that they were not the ones thinking independently, and that they were many puppets in World War 1. The last quote in chapter 2 says, “We had fancied our task would be different, only to find we were to be trained for heroism as though we were circus-ponies.”(Remarque, pg 21) These quotes all show that they were being controlled by higher ranks and the leaders of Germany. This caused them to question their position on the war, and if they were right or not in fighting for Germany. While this was also a major theme in the book, the brutality of war stood out in a very strong
All Quiet on the Western Front point this theme out in a very prominent way. Erich Maria Remarque did not hold back while describing certain topics and event from WW1. One quote in chapter 10 states, “A man cannot realize that above such shattered bodies there are still human faces in which life goes its daily round. And this is only one hospital, one single station; there are hundreds of thousands in Germany, hundreds of thousands in France, hundreds of thousands in Russia”(Remarque, pg 209) How senseless is everything that can ever be written, done, or thought when such things are possible. It must all be lies and of no account when the culture of a thousand years could not prevent this stream of blood being poured out, these torture-chambers in their hundreds of thousands. A hospital alone shows what war is. Another statement from the book reads,”But on the last day an astonishing number of English field guns opened up on us with high-explosive, drumming ceaselessly on our position, so that we suffered heavily and came back only eighty strong.” On chapter 1, another piece of evidence from the book states, But on the last day an astonishing number of English field guns opened up on us with high-explosive, drumming ceaselessly on our position, so that we suffered heavily and came back only eighty strong.” While this does not show the graphic brutality as much as
