Western societies’ diet is potentially causing the increase of Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) due to the high consumption of meats in every meal. NAFLD occurs when the liver is composed of over 10 percent of fat from a non-alcoholic diet. Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease can cause serious liver dysfunction, scarring of the tissue in the liver as well as lead to cancer and cardiovascular diseases. Obesity is among one of the risk factors for NAFLD. Fortunately living a healthy lifestyle consisting of exercise and a balanced diet can curb the risk and severity of the condition. Unfortunately with the Obesity epidemic many westerners are still at risk. When the diets of these candidates were assessed, animal protein over total protein consumed was linked directly to the disease. According to one of the researchers Dr. Louise Alferink the conclusion of the research found is that with the hypothesis that western-style diet that is composed heavily of animal protein and refined foods affect the health of the body and is associated with NAFLD in overweight seniors (as citied in Newman). The link of NAFD and an overweight society highlights how the obesity problem we face in America is affecting our health and it’s a lot more than just finding the correct pant size. With up to 30 percent of Western adults believed to be living with this disease it is a cause for alarm. Obesity in America has been a problem for a while and can cause many social problems such as rising of health care cost and transportation. Many overweight Americans have to purchase extra transportation accommodations for airlines and often feel discriminated against.
