Black lives in America have been devalued from the moment the first shipment of black slaves arrived in Jamestown in 1619. They were seen as nothing more than an lucrative animal to help aid in the production of various crops, such as tobacco, rice, and cotton. European settlers found it difficult to enslave natives as they had a better understanding of the land and would often escape from the plantation. After their time was served, they were given “freedom dues,” with that came a piece of land and supplies. Black and whites became free. The word “slavery” brings back horrific memories of human beings. Bought and sold as property, and dehumanized with the risk and implementation of violence, at times nearly inhumane.
