Throughout my entire life, community service has been a crucial aspect within my life, cultivating my desire to give back to my community through volunteering. Over my high school years, and even before, I have been actively involved in numerous community services activities, including volunteering for the Waunakee Whirlwinds 4-H club, volunteering within school at the Waunakee High School Peer Tutoring and Writing Center, as well as various other activities. These invaluable experiences have not only given me opportunities to contribute positively within my community, but have also cultivated and influenced my values and shaped me into the person I am today, all while following the Waunakee Rotary Foundation motto Service Above Self. In addition, I have actively participated in activities related to Sienna Crest Assisted Living, in which I have created Valentine’s Day cards, Christmas cards, participated in painting events, and played bingo with the residents. Being able to experience these events, as well as interact with senior citizens has provided senses of companionship and joy with myself and the residents, allowing me to reminisce about the impact I made for the residents with my gestures of kindness.Furthermore, similarly to volunteering at Sienna Crest Assisted Living, I have continued to create an impact on senior citizens by creating handmade Valentine’s Day and Christmas cards during the holiday seasons. These experiences continue to reinforce the idea that even small and simple acts of kindness and thoughtfulness can brighten someone’s day, and even week, immensely. Another major community service activity I have consistently participated in throughout high school has been organizing and leading food and paper products donation …show more content…
Along with being involved with community service around the holiday season, I have also volunteered in creating wooden squirrel boxes with my 4-H club for the Dane County Humane Society. As I created the squirrel boxes, I also provided guidance to other younger members on woodworking techniques and guidance on how to use power tools safely. This experience was not only able to share my knowledge and skills with others, but to dedicate myself to a positive environmental cause, all while putting community service before myself. However, I have not just volunteered in local activities, but have participated in global volunteering events, aiming to improve the lives of people around the globe. For example, participating in service projects like Sole Hope, where I was able to design and prepare denim shoe soles for children in East Africa, to packaging food at Food for Kidz, has further developed my understanding of the importance of community service, and that no matter how small, every effort contributes to impacts around the
Growing up, my parents and other influential figures around me modelled the importance of community service through their continual volunteer work and dedication to improving the world around them. Whether it be participation in a well-attended project or persistent contribution to a helpful organization, those aforementioned individuals were formative in guiding me towards a path filled with opportunities for having an impact on my community.
I equate service with helpfulness—assisting others. I help both my school community by answering questions and giving feedback and my community as a whole through my volunteer activities, the most enjoyable of which has been Habitat for Humanity.
This past summer, I acquired an internship at Baldwin and Lyons, an insurance company in Indianapolis. Every Wednesday during my internship, a couple of employees and I participate in a prodigious community service project, Meals on Wheels. Throughout the three months that I worked at Baldwin and Lyons, I got acquainted with some of the individuals whom we delivered to. These inspiring individuals were so grateful and appreciative that we took time out of our day to volunteer to do such a service. One elderly woman who we delivered to would sing to us as she came to the front door “good meals, good meals, good meals.”
People become involved in community service for different reasons and it is up to the individual to realize if it is worthwhile and why they are helping others. Community service brings a nation together. Every country wants its community to be disciplined and work for change. Community service is the best way to inculcate responsibility into individuals. This is where I come in, as a volunteer, as an activist for a change and assistance. I have been inducted and a member of three unique clubs with a core purpose of community service and assistance to others. I have been apart of CSF, California Scholarship Federation, for three years and counting. Each system it is required for obtain fifteen hours of community service, whether be with an organization or school based activity. California Scholarship Federation is an exclusive community of college bound scholars who share resources, provide peer tutoring, and pursue success through community service and academic achievement. I became inducted into NHS, National Honor Society, my sophomore year. Since then I have been an active member participating in every community service opportunity our club participates in. In addition to the club's community service, we as members are required to obtain a certain amount of community service outside the club in order for our membership to not be revoked. NHS
People’s lives are changed every day by their actions and experiences. This past summer, I participated in a community service project, an experience that opened my eyes in many ways. I was a volunteer at the County Memorial Hospital. In my time as a volunteer at the hospital, I was able to meet patients and staff members from all over the world and learn about their life experiences. Listening to all of their stories has made me truly appreciate everything which I have.
There remains this experience in my mind that I need to write about that actually inspired me in countless behaviors in reference to service and self. I consider relationships concerning those in the helping field and those obtaining aid stands as particularly vital; hence, I believe I must direct focus on this concept. I resolved to enter this discipline because I wanted to give back to those in the community in need. One day I was speaking with a counselor at Centaur who happened to tell me about the significance of connecting to clients, and she expressed to me that I should pay homage to those who accept the “gift” of service because without them, we would not possess the zeal to accomplish authentic behaviors approaching community service. I realized these were true words of wisdom because when I thought about it, I realized my actions were not just about those that I helped but how I helped myself. Thus, in my opinion, these connections were essentially interactions that were in effect a “gift” that could be passed on. I am not just here to help and individual, I am here to create notable connections that would present the motivation to others to also aid those in need and bolster the
Every summer, I volunteer at Valley Baptist Medical Center for 60 hours or more because I believe it is my duty to give back to the hospital and community that I was born and raised in. Providing a hand to those who are treating patients that are ill is what I live for. In addition to this, every Thanksgiving, I volunteer in a community event known as “H-E-B Feast of Sharing” in which I and many volunteers prepare and serve meals to the low-income and homeless citizens who can not afford to prepare a meal for Thanksgiving. Although it is a holiday that I celebrate myself, I believe it is my duty as an individual to put others first before myself, which have taught me the values of generosity and selflessness.
Ever since I read Tulane’s motto, "Non sibi, sed suis," translated as "not for one 's self, but for one 's own.", I knew right away that Tulane was the place for me as this motto encapsulates the very principle upon which I have long-since resolved to live my life. From my first fundraiser at the age of seven, during which I raised $1,000 through grassroots fundraising, to being an active part in helping put an end to food insecurity in my own community, to co-founding my nonprofit, Kindling Hope, community service has always been a very important part of my life.
Besides volunteering at the city court and the hospital, I am exploring other avenues to help my fellow man. I started a school tradition that is sure to last: "Bowie Community Service Month." At work, I initiated and coordinated a community activity involving about 40 kids ages 5-10. But greater still, I have inspired. My little sister and her group of friends are now volunteering in the city. Project Wisdom has given me the confidence, by speaking directly to me, to venture into the community.
Volunteering enables an individual to make a positive impact on his or her community, while empowering the individual to better his or her life. This summer, I had the opportunity to volunteer at many diverse locations. From the hospital to the local library, I truly value my experience and treasure everything it has thought me. Volunteering lets us experience and learn things that we otherwise would not have learned; volunteering opens doors for us that we may not have been able to open before. Volunteering provides us with guidance and tolerance which we may use in the future to aid us in our decisions. At first glance, volunteering may seem to only benefit those who are helped, but on a deeper level, one can realize that volunteering benefits the volunteer as much as, if not more than, those who are helped. Not only does volunteering make a difference in one’s community, but it also helps the volunteer become a smarter, happier, friendlier and more caring individual.
Volunteering in a nursing home is a profoundly rewarding way to make a positive impact on the lives of the elderly and those in need of companionship and assistance. It's an opportunity to bridge the gap between generations, to learn from the rich tapestry of stories and experiences that the residents have to share, to bring joy and variety to their daily routines. As a volunteer, people can contribute through various activities like organizing events, providing personal companionship, or assisting with daily tasks. The act of volunteering not only enhances the lives of nursing home residents but also enriches people's lives, offering a unique perspective on the value of community, empathy, and service. The Power of Volunteering.
A few years ago, I heard the quote, “Volunteers don’t necessarily have the time; they simply have the heart.” I had just joined the Anchor Club at my school, and we were discussing service projects and places to volunteer in our area. The Humane Society, Habitat for Humanity, and Meals on Wheels were a few options. I did not feel like those services were for me. I wanted to volunteer with something more suited to my interests.
From picking up a piece of trash, to devoting your life advocating for a charity, community service is desperately needed in
Some families relied on the food that I served at Saint Vincent De Paul. Kids used the tutoring and advice I gave them for homework and study skills that they can implement themselves at home and school to better their lives and open numerous opportunities for themselves in the future. My examples are only two of endless positive impacts that volunteering can have on a community. The last benefit that requiring 100 service hours can have on a kid is often forgotten about and is secondary to the volunteering itself. The actual process of completing 100 hours of service through four years requires planning ahead, organization, and dedication, all of which are pertinent skills that are useful for
These experiences have afforded me opportunities to demonstrate my gifts and talents that had previously gone undiscovered. Through different community service opportunities, I either learned something new about myself or I was reassured something. These qualities include that I am creative, reliable, open-minded, passionate, and an effective team player. Community service changed my life by developing my character through enhancing my transferable skills, which allowed me to see the world differently. Everyone, from all walks of life, needs to in some way, shape, or form give back to the community because it will not only benefit the less fortunate but it will benefit the volunteers as well. Additionally, I learned about the wide variety of resources available to help the community. There are so many resources out there that people are ignorant to like certain shelters and food banks. Ultimately, community service taught me the greatest gift I could ever receive, how to be
