Elia Kazan’s film, On the Waterfront, demonstrates the complicated life of washed up ex-boxer, Terry Malloy, and his fight against the organized crime conglomerate that controls the shipping docks of Hoboken, New Jersey. The specific elements within the film, such as supporting characters, surrounding environment, and outfit selection are carefully utilized in order to constantly support Terry’s self-perception as the plot develops. The 1954 film On The Waterfront, demonstrates the reoccurring theme of importance of individual integrity in a corrupt society through character development, narrative structure, and costume employed through mise-en-scéne.
The character of Terry Malloy, portrayed by Marlon Brando, proves to present himself as a very complicated individual within the film. While being surrounded by a variety of strong influences, Terry is forced to make complicated choices that permanently alter his psyche as well as mental outlook on his life situations. One of his most strong influences would be the prominent supporting characters within the film: Edie Doyle, Father Barry, and his brother Charlie.
The bundle of contradictory emotions housed by Malloy are brought to light and acted upon with the aid of Joey Doyle’s sister, Edie. After meeting Edie at the docks and learning of her relation to Joey, he is immediately clouded with a strong feeling of guilt, which continues to grow as he spends more and more time with her. Edie’s modest and angelic personality have a strong affect on Malloy’s rough and rugged heart, allowing him to reclaim his conscience and make the correct moral choices. Standing tall and stoic among the workers, the height of the priest ensured viewers with a sense of nobility and pride. His height among the workers was also an indicator of his importance in their lives, as someone for them to seek for answers or aid.
The film On the Waterfront was a masterpiece in itself with many underlying themes that spoke out to viewers and allowed them to view society in a new light. Through the development of the characters, the plot and narrative structure, and costume and makeup design, the main themes within the film are brought to life. Terry Malloy, a mentally complex character, is able to overcome the constriction of an infectious, corrupted society, and attain his own individual integrity.
Terry Malloy was depicted as one who was thought down upon, but had the ability to rise and prove himself. Throughout this journey, he faced many challenges, his actions resembled some of the main points that the screenwriter Dalton Trumbo stated. In the early section of the movie, Terry Malloy was conflicted on the thought of being a “pigeon” and ratting out Johnny Friendly, the mob boss who basically raised him, or just doing the right thing. Throughout the whole film, Malloy displayed himself as a bum. He rarely works, and he is a has-been boxer. Others occasionally criticize him about his boxing career; explaining to him that he was no good. Because a lot of the criticism got to Terry’s head, he was unable to associate with others. This proves so with the relationship he has with Edie Doyle. He is barely able to hold the relationship with Edie, even though she is the one whom Terry loves so much. Up to this point, Malloy does not display himself as a hero, or even close to being one.

Emotions take a big toll on the way a person handles an issue and people do not necessarily compartmentalize in order to make the right decision with ease. Norma Jean and Leroy are the antagonist and protagonist; are at war with each other. Situational turning -point occurs when Leroy arrives home and continues to stay home after being involved in a truck accident at work. Norma Jean is not used to her husband being home often and she would rather have him on the road again. Leroy is excited to settle down with his wife but she wants him gone again. The noir style is showcased in Sunset Boulevard with its use of visually dark and uncomfortable settings and camera work, as well as its use of the traditional film noir characters. In addition, the overall tone and themes expressed in it tightly correspond to what many film noirs addressed. What made this film unique was its harsh criticism of the film industry itself, which some of Wilder’s peers saw as biting the hand that fed him. There is frequent commentary on the superficial state of Hollywood and its indifference to suffering, which is still a topic avoided by many in the film business today. However, Sunset Blvd. set a precedent for future film noirs, and is an inspiration for those who do not quite believe what they are being shown by Hollywood.
To some this story might seem like a tragedy, but to Christians this is a beautiful story. Although young Harry dies at the end, he is accepted into the kingdom of God, which is far superior to anything on Earth. A non-religious family raises him and the first taste of Christianity he gets makes him want to pursue God. In Flannery O’Conner’s short story, The River, the allure of Gods grace and the repelling of sinful ways are shown heavily through Harry.

Within the film, Mystic River, there are many symbols and themes; a major symbol is only half of Dave’s name written in the cement symbolizing that Dave is only half present and that he lost his innocence. Dave is shown as being withdrawn, awkward and shy, which is due to Dave being half present and his lost of youth. The theme of unspoken secrets is present throughout the film. Both the symbol and the theme help to drive the movie forward. Dave has unspoken secrets about what happened to him as a child, but also the night he killed a man.
The Godfather is the “dark-side of the American dream story” (Turan, pp2). The film follows the practices of a fictional Italian mafia family, the Corleone’s. Though most Americans do not condone the practices of the Italian mafia, they cannot deny that Francis Ford Coppola’s The Godfather is a cinematic masterpiece. This film gave insight to a mysterious way of life that the average person does not have knowledge of. As the audience is educated about the mafia they also are introduced to many stereotypes.
Sunset Boulevard (Wilder 1950) explores the intermingling of public and private realms, puncturing the illusion of the former and unveiling the grim and often disturbing reality of the latter. By delving into the personal delusions of its characters and showing the devastation caused by disrupting those fantasies, the film provides not only a commentary on the industry of which it is a product but also a shared anxiety about the corrupting influence of external perception. Narrated by a dead man, centering on a recluse tortured by her own former stardom, and concerning a once-promising director who refuses to believe his greatest star could ever be forgotten, the work dissects a multitude of illusory folds to reveal an ultimately undesirable truth. Its fundamental conflict lies in the compartmentalization that allows the downtrodden to hope and carry on. Sunset Boulevard carefully considers the intricate honeycombs of dishonesty and deception that constitute a human life, then dissolves the barriers and watches the emotions, lies, and self-contradictions slurry together and react in often volatile and destructive ways.
