2.1.3 Waterfront Redevelopment
The Boston Redevelopment Authority (2014) stated that the waterfront development and waterfront transportation, the state has been known for having a history for shipbuilding and ocean trade because of the waterfront orientation. They saw this as a potential for a logical place for expansion for a transportation option. Across the harbor are offered transportation routes for commuters and visitors. They added this as a solution for the urban congestion in the area especially in bridges and tunnels.
In lower Manhattan, according to the DNA info (2012), there was a bold plan by the City’s Landmark’s Preservation Commission to redevelop the South Street Seaport’s Pier 17 with a new high-end shops and a rooftop music venue to make a view to the cityscape of Manhattan. With the addition of the condominium, the provision of revenue will come here and will enable the company to do all the things they said without destroying much of the existing amenities.
In addition to what the Boston Redevelopment Authority said (2014), the area wherein the redevelopment took place was at Boston- the South Boston Waterfront or Seaport, the area was used then to be a landfill. The area is use for residential purposes, a pier and as channels. It was used before as a seaport and was considered as a bustling industrial center in Boston. There were downsides during the industrial era, wherein the site was used as parking slots/ area. Located on the waterfront of Boston, potentials for residential, office, commercial and for tourism were seen during the 20th-21st century.
The 1999 Seaport Public Realm Plan outlines the City's goals for activating and enhancing the South Boston Waterfront. There were five goals of the plan and it was stated as
