2.1.3 Waterfront Redevelopment
The Boston Redevelopment Authority (2014) stated that the waterfront development and waterfront transportation, the state has been known for having a history for shipbuilding and ocean trade because of the waterfront orientation. They saw this as a potential for a logical place for expansion for a transportation option. Across the harbor are offered transportation routes for commuters and visitors. They added this as a solution for the urban congestion in the area especially in bridges and tunnels.
In lower Manhattan, according to the DNA info (2012), there was a bold plan by the City’s Landmark’s Preservation Commission to redevelop the South Street Seaport’s Pier 17 with a new high-end shops and a rooftop music venue to make a view to the cityscape of Manhattan. With the addition of the condominium, the provision of revenue will come here and will enable the company to do all the things they said without destroying much of the existing amenities.
In addition to what the Boston Redevelopment Authority said (2014), the area wherein the redevelopment took place was at Boston- the South Boston Waterfront or Seaport, the area was used then to be a landfill. The area is use for residential purposes, a pier and as channels. It was used before as a seaport and was considered as a bustling industrial center in Boston. There were downsides during the industrial era, wherein the site was used as parking slots/ area. Located on the waterfront of Boston, potentials for residential, office, commercial and for tourism were seen during the 20th-21st century.

There are many examples of cities reforming itself over time, one significant example is Vancouver's Downtown Eastside. More than a hundred years after the discovery of gold that drew thousands of migrants to Vancouver, the city has changed a lot, and so does one of its oldest community: Downtown Eastside. Began as a small town for workers that migrants frequently, after these workers moved away with all the money they have made, Downtown Eastside faced many hardships and changes. As a city, Vancouver gave much support to improve the area’s living quality and economics, known as a process called gentrification. But is this process really benefiting everyone living in Downtown Eastside? The answer is no. Gentrification towards DTES(Downtown Eastside) did not benefit the all the inhabitants of the area. Reasons are the new rent price of the area is much higher than before the gentrification, new businesses are not community-minded, and the old culture and lifestyle of the DTES is getting erased by the new residents.
Many factors and geographical processes, the foreshore of Sydney Harbour has constantly faced changes in land use which has effected the environment, social communities and the economy in both positive and negative ways. Urban decay, urban renewal, urban consolidation and gentrification are the geographical process that are involved in the changing gland use around the Sydney Harbour foreshore. These geographical processes are what changes the land use from being used as industrial, residential and commercial which then impacts the economy, social communities/ public, the environment and the stakeholders.

The rezoning of 125th street has been a topic of controversy and has yet to be approved. The Department of City Planning believes rezoning of 125th street will bring positive economic changes. I personally believe that these changes would negatively affect the residents and business owners of Harlem. According to the New York City’s Planning Commission, the rezoning will bring new business and housing. Residents and business owners disagree because they believe this plays a bigger role in promoting further “gentrification.” I believe that Harlem should be able to keep its cultural heritage while still promoting and modifying economic growth.
This investigation is based on the assumption that gentrification with all its troubles can’t be prevented and is an inherent part of every city. What are the negative impacts of gentrification? What are the underlying mechanisms that feed these impacts? What drives these mechanisms? What would be an alternative scenario?
This district was an immense center of bizarre entertainment for miners, entrepreneurs and sailors. After the 1906 earthquake, the city saw an opportunity to clean up the Barbary Coast, transforming it into an acceptable area for the everyday San Franciscans. The Barbary Coast evolves immensely throughout the decades to what we know nowadays as Chinatown, North Beach, and Jackson Square. However, there has been insufficient attention to how and why place and neighborhood contribute to racial/ethnic health disparities. This analysis examines the health implication of racial segregation as a result of gentrification on African Americans, explores systems of segregation measurement, and proposes ways to move beyond traditional public health and health care approaches to impact relevant policy.
In this article, the author writes about the Urban Renewal Plan and what it did to a community in Oakland, California. The West Oakland community was found in 1852 and had a diverse population living there. That article says that upper-class people would be living next door to working class people. After the World Wars that changed because lower income families started moving to the area looking for jobs. The jobs they had were created because of the war. When the war ended these people lost their jobs. At the same time, the Urban Renewal Plan was put into place. This plan set out to remove slums in urban places. Harlem, a historic capital of African-American culture, sadly appears to be losing its everlastingly rich black culture and sense of community. This is due to the uproar of the unfavorable and unaffordable “luxury” housing that has been invested into the community over the past decade. According to Merriam Webster, gentrification is “the process of renewal and rebuilding accompanying the influx of middle-class or affluent people into deteriorating areas that often displaces poorer residents”. Coined by British sociologist, Ruth Glass in the 1960s, gentrification materialized following the implementation of post-World War II reconstruction programs where, in London, working-class residences were invaded by the influx of lower and upper middle-classes.
Gentrification is a highly important topic that has not only been occurring all over the United States, but especially closer than we may have thought. San Francisco is home to hundreds of thousands of people who have been a part of how amazing this city has become. San Francisco is one of the most visited places in the world with many of its famous landmarks, endless opportunities not only for daytime fun but also has an amazing nightlife that people cannot get enough of. People come for a great time and could not be done without the help of the people who have grown up to experience and love this city for what it truly is. The cost of living in such an important city has definitely had its affect of lower income San Francisco residents. For decades we have seen changes occurring in parts of San Francisco where minorities live. We have seen this in Chinatown, SOMA, Fillmore district, and especially the Mission district.

Most people take the urban public transportation system for granted. It is used in every aspect of our daily lives: work, education, medical necessities, recreation, etc. It is also important for the transportation of goods and services, which aids the growth and maintenance of our economy. Urban public transportation is the critical component of our quality of life and economic stability. The MBTA, the Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority, is Boston and Eastern Massachusetts’s major transportation service. The MBTA has played a central role in the development of Boston and surrounding cities and towns for more than a century; providing service from 175 cities and towns into Boston. On an average weekday over 1.2 million trips are made on the subway, buses, commuter lines and other services in the mass transit system. With an international airport, a ship port, the highways, and the rail lines to connect regional cities and towns to national and international destinations and markets, Boston’s urban public transportation system has made the region’s growing role in the global economy possible.
