Introduction
Water pollution is always one of the major concerns for environmental engineering. Toxic water sources can be a critical problem, it will endanger some species or even the whole eco-system. Also, it might cause various problem of human's health. Water pollution can be caused by different reasons such as acid rain, runoff of fertilizer, industrial wastes etc. Treatment of water is necessary to prevent such pollutants. Engineers have several ways to measure the quality of water
- Measuring the pH level of the water
- Measuring the level of dissolved oxygen chemically and biologically (COD, BOD)
- Measuring the amount of bacteria
- Biological sample
There are so many other ways to measure water quality. In this lab report, we are going to discuss BOD, biochemical oxygen demand.
What is BOD ?
BOD determines the quality of water by measuring the amount of dissolved oxygen in the samples. The oxygen in the water is usually from photosynthesis of aquatic plants and oxygen from the air that dissolved into the water. Bacteria uses the dissolved oxygen to degrade the organic matters and produce energy for cell maintenance and growth. The Bacteria/micro- organisms will stop growing until the organic matters run out hence the less the organic matters, the better the water quality. The BOD experiment can measure change of dissolved oxygen level and calculate the amount of micro-organism in each sample. [1]

At last, nutrients play a key role of the decomposition. If the nutrients are deficient, the bacteria will lose its ability to consume microorganisms. This error is fairly simple to solve, we just have to make sure the seeded water contain enough nutrient for the bacteria for 7 days.
Conclusion
After we conducted the experiment, we found out the sample with the least dilution factor has the biggest BOD value. We also found out BOD value is inversely proportional fraction of waste water volume and total combined volume. In conclusion, the biggest dilution factor, the more BOD value and the worse water quality. There are some errors in the experiments but most of them can be eliminated to produce a more accurate result.

Methodology: The experimenter used two ten gallon tanks. One tank will be used for the controlled group and the other tank will be used for the experimental group. Each tank will have two pounds of sand spread among the bottom of the tank along with rocks and artificial habitats to add nitrogen to the tanks. To add optimal living conditions for the oceanic life water filtration systems, temperature regulator, circulation systems, and a light to mimic the sun’s rays were added to each tank. At all times both tanks had a temperature of 75 degrees F. This experiment was done over a three month period. The first month was to allow the nitrogen cycle to occur. This allows the fish to be exposed to the water without having stress reactions due to unhealthy living conditions due to the nitrogen. Once the first month was complete six fish was added to both tanks. Two tangs, two damsels, and two clownfish. At first both tanks had a pH level of 8.2, ideal living conditions. After one week the experimental group was exposed to a pH level of 8.6. After two weeks it was raised to 9. Two weeks later it was raised to 9.3. According to Mrs. Loch’s fourth period class, there are many reasons as to why some things were wrong with Robbins Park’s water. The reasoning varies due to many different factors. Physical factors such as weather is a major issue. It’s an issue because it changes, and is not always the most credible data tests. This can affect different chemical factors of the water’s quality such as the pH and turbidity. The turbidity was 5 JTU was clear, but the DO level was 4ppm which is liveable, but very low. Also, the phosphat level was 2.75 ppm which is very high seeing as normal is below 0.03. Biological factors were also a problem because of the organisms living in the pond which were mostly pollution tolerant with limited to none pollution sensitive one. They can show the effects of the poor water quality, and if they are absent they show pollution/unsuitable conditions. The chemical factors can also affect the water quality. When leaves begin decomposing in the pond, phosphates are left behind, which can also be a reason why we found high levels of phosphate in the pond.
To tell how healthy a body of water is, you would need to measure the amount of dissolved oxygen (DO) in the water. Water is only able to dissolve a certain amount of oxygen to be classified as healthy. And once, the maximum amount of oxygen from the atmosphere that can dissolve in water, which is about 9.8 mg/l, is reached , no more oxygen will dissolve. This shows that water needs to maintain a certain amount of dissolved oxygen, typically 4-5 mg/l, for it to be classified as healthy and to support aquatic animals. If the dissolved oxygen levels drop below 5.0 mg/l, the aquatic life will be put under stress. The amount of dissolved oxygen in the water is affected by several physical and biological (natural) factors.
For my first experiment, my hypothesis was “If oil is applied to ground water, then the groundwater will become contaminated and oil will be present. If vinegar is applied to groundwater it would have the least effect on the water, showing clear visibility. If laundry detergent is applied to groundwater, the groundwater would be more clouded then oil and vinegar especially if stirred.” For my second experiment my hypothesis was “If my filtration technique to remove contaminants is to separate the contaminated water and over time after treatment the water would become clean. Water Quality is a way used to measure the quality of water in an area based on sampling. The water quality in the UHS creek was excellent. Humans can negatively impact water quality by dumping waste from factories in to rivers. As many industries are located along rivers, it makes them a convenient place for them to dump their waste, polluting the water. Another way humans can effect water quality is from storm water runoff. When it rains, the water travels down into ditches which can lead to streams, and on the way down the water picks up harmful chemicals in our cities that make their way into food chains.

In this lab we will be testing bodies of freshwater. We will be determining the quality of the water based on multiple factors including nitrates, phosphates, pH levels, and dissolved oxygen levels. All of these factors must be in appropriate ranges for the ecosystem to be healthy.

According to the Natural Resources Defense Council, people consume from 240 to over 10000 times more per gallon for bottled water than they usually do for tap water. (NRDC) In addition, according to a survey from US National Library of Medicines, only 17% of the participants prefer to drink tap water exclusively.(US National Library) Compared to the bottled water which is shining like a superstar, tap water is like a diligent worker in the shade, unpopular but useful. The extremely unbalance of bottled water consumption implies that a commonly hold conception exists: bottle water is superior to tap water. In fact, scientific evidence proves that tap water is nothing different than bottle water. More importantly, the excessive consumption of bottled water is an irrational use of resources and creates severe environmental issues.
