Reporter I along with two other students visited Water of Life Outreach Ministry in Northwest Minneapolis on Sunday 9, 2016. The Sunday morning service that we attended was from 9:00 a.m. – 11:00 a.m. The majority of the churches members were African American. There was also a small number of white people that attended the Church. The age group ranged from young children with parents to elderly adults. I would say the average age of the Church members would be around 40. On Sunday 11, 2016 there was approximately 40-50 members. The members in this Church appear to be very close and I would assume they come from the local neighborhood around the Church. The members of the Church wore very casual clothing to the service. Most members had jeans on rather than slacks and a nicer shirt. One of the elders even wore a Vikings jersey to the service. The members welcomed us into the Church with open arms. When we first entered the Church we were greeted by friendly faces and good moorings. The service was very formal. Time did not seem to be kept for each part. The service started with gospel music. I believe that the Gospel music was the center point of the worship. It took up the longest portion and everyone was involved. You could truly see the external faith of everyone during …show more content…
It is worship singing time. I can see other members from my Church up there singing and dancing. As I singing and dance, I look around and see all my friends participating too. We are all doing different dance moves and different volumes of singing, but we are all worshiping together as a body believer. As I’m dancing another member starts talking to me. I then start talking to them, but continue to dance because the music is going. It’s time to sit down now as a group of my friends/other members step to the front. They suddenly start dancing for us. Together as a church we all stand and clap for our
The service concluded with the bishop standing and speaking to the people for a few minutes he spoke on the importance of the service and He shared some scripture and personal stories. After the service Father Constantine invited everyone next door for refreshments, and stayed in the nave to answer any of our questions, this time was very helpful to me since this was my first time at a Orthodox church. Overall it was a very enjoyable experience I learned a lot about the Orthodox tradition. I don't think I would have been able to grasp the differences between the different branches in Christianity without witnessing them first hand.
They started the service by blowing of a horn called the Shofar. It took me by surprise because I am used to an opening of prayer at my church and where we also have a contemporary ...
...in Islam singing never been a part of a ritual practice. That church was different than any other worshiping places I have visited before. I was very happy after this experience, because they still send me emails, mails, and thank you cards every Sunday. Before I leave they gave me a copy of New Testament Book and The Story of Jesus to help me in my research. I did not feel that I’m a stranger or a guest; I felt that I am one of the group members and my present is important for them. Obviously , through that experience their goals was knowing God through believing in Christ, grow in faith and spiritual maturity by providing opportunities for spiritual growth through Life Groups, and love and serve others unselfishly as Christ did, by equipping and preparing for service and offering various opportunities to serve within the church and in our community and the world.
b.Black Life Matters Conference at Dunbar School, Jan. 15 to 17.Jan. 7-8: 1 to 5 p.m at the. Unitarian Universalist Congregation of Columbus, 7850 W. Goeller Blvd. in Columbus,
For about an hour people danced to music that was blasting from a large speaker. Then everyone started to get ready to leave. All of the women and girls who were there lined up into a procession with the young girls going through the initiation ceremony at the front. We made our way in the dark down the uneven paths, unsure where to place our feet since only a few people in our large group had lights.
Once the service started, my friend showed me where the schedule for the service was and what each number meant. There were different colors of numbers in the book and those indicated what section the reading or song was coming from. This was different from the church that I attend because we have a choir and a band that plays the songs and if you wish to join in you can but for the Catholic Church there is, no choir and the members of the church are the ones who sing. After some singing, the priest came up to talk and this is very different from what I expected. I was used to flipping through the channels and seeing the catholic churches with the priest who were a ...
Brother Terry, lead us in a quick prayer to open the morning's service. The band was already in position and a worship team was waiting in the wings.
The church external appearance was quite different than other churches that I have seen. It was basically a big white stucco block with a gold dome on top and four decorated spikes on each corner of the building that surrounded the dome. The people of course were all Greek and were very well dressed. Most of the men and boys all wore suits, and If not they had some kind of vest on. I don’t know if this was some kind of rule or tradition, but it mostly seemed as a respect to God. The women all wore the basic dresses, and all the skirts fell down below the knee. Everybody was proper and ordered. As I walked in the church I entered a lobby of some kind. What I saw hear was something like social hour. Everybody was in there. They were all speaking Greek, and I felt as if I was in a family reunion party. The children were all together; the adults talked together and the young adults all were together. The way they all socialize is when someone comes up to say hello, they give each other a kiss on the cheek and a hug. These people are all very close to each other. It seems as if the church is the center of their lives. I admire that trait as well. To enter the auditorium you must enter this little room, which has a piece of garment from St. Constantine and St. Helen. Also there were candles lit. As they walked through this little room they lit a candle and knelt down for a moment to pray, and then touched each garment and made a cross over their chest.
The format of a Baptist Sunday service consists of the choir, devotion (psalms, scripture, message, prayer, song), responsive readings, congregational prayer, choir, sermon, and invitation to join the church, offering, and then special announcements. Each month a different part of the church is in charge of the prayer service.
Another interesting part was when an older couple asked to come onto the stage and recite a few versus related to their marriage. Rabbi Gibson led most of the service as they continued to sing and recite versus from the prayer book, and sang happy birthday to a member of the
The current members are very happy with the so called “crowd” that attends on Sunday morning. They all look alike; in looks as well as their thinking process. Gone are the days when they could walk to church. They have moved out of the community into maintenance free homes or to retirement living. Money is not an issue with this church, as the old time members have more than enough money to support the church.
His church is a “good sized” suburban church that has been around for 295 years. He describes the parishioners as having a “broad tent” of theological views. This congregation is open to new ideas and re-visiting the old. They appear to be carrying out intentional missional work in their community
The people there were all extremely nice and would try to help me understand. They understood and accepted the fact that I wasn’t religious, but was showing interest in their faith. There were not as much people there as I had expected, but that might have been because it was a smaller church. It also wasn’t as racially diverse as I had expected. I thought that because it is the world’s biggest religion, that it
As a young child, I spent Sundays in the pews of various churches. My extended family had a wide variety of different denominations of Christianity. Some churches had loud music with singing and dancing, others lots of sitting and standing. But the
It gave me the chance to see how other people worship or fulfill their spiritual need. I was able to see and get a better understanding of the things that go on. It seems that we all share the same goals. To be good people, listen and receive the Word of God and to go out and spread to other people what we have been
