The Cold War (1947-1991), was a rivalry between the United States (US) and the Soviet Union (USSR), fueled by tensions amidst the two superpowers, post World War II (WW2). Both superpowers were cautious of each other and viewed their conflict through ideological lenses, with the US promoting democracy and capitalism, and the USSR advocating communism. This essay asserts that the US was the most blatant aggressor during the Cold War, threatening the USSR, and the USSR mostly reacted to policies made by the US for the sake of Soviet security. Tensions escalated when President Truman revealed the US atomic bomb to Stalin at the Potsdam Conference (1945) and subsequently used it on Japan in August 1945 to end the war. This American action marked the beginning of the nuclear arms race and defined the pre-Cold War era. Allowing the US to emerge as the strongest power post-WWII, boasting the world's strongest economy and the only nuclear arsenal, it signalled its military might and resolve to use nuclear weapons if necessary. This display of power could be perceived as aggressive by other nations, particularly the Soviet Union, and unintentionally spark the competition between the two superpowers. Secondly, when the Long Telegram was received by the US from George Kennan in 1946, confirming Soviet ambitions to spread communism, Truman was prompted to adopt the containment strategy in 1947, known as the Truman Doctrine. The proactive approach aimed to limit Soviet expansion and influence by supporting only democratic nations threatened by communism.
