Was Brutus’ actions really an act of patriotism? In Julius Caesar, the play, he conspired with many other people to kill Caesar, so he wouldn’t become king. Brutus was a traitor because Caesar was his friend and he didn't stay loyal to him. Even though his action was dreadful towards his friend, the question is whether it was patriotic or not. Brutus was a patriot for he didn't want the people that lived in Rome to suffer from Caesar's dictatorship.

Although Brutus was thinking of the big picture, he did show actions of a betrayer. Brutus in cold blood still killed Caesar when Caesar looked into Brutus’ eyes with shock. For example, when Caesar said “And you too, Brutus? In that case, die, Caesar (Act 3, Scene 1, Page 5).” This quote shows that Caesar was astonished and felt extremely betrayed. A patriot is someone that is willing to defend their country no matter what it takes. Brutus’ action of killing Caesar was for his country and that makes him a patriot. In the play, Brutus said “The only way is to kill Caesar. I have no personal reason to strike at him—only the best interest of the people (Act 2, Scene 1, Page 1).” This shows that he didn’t want to kill his friend, but he had to do it to save his nation. Furthermore, Brutus’ reason for Caesar’s death wasn’t out of anger or envy, but to prevent tyranny. For example, he said “Our action will seem too bloody if we cut off Caesar’s head and then hack at his arms and legs too, Caius Cassius—because Mark Antony is merely one of Caesar’s arms. It’ll look like we killed Caesar out of anger and Mark Antony out of envy. Let’s be sacrificers but not butchers, Caius. We’re all against what Caesar stands for, and there’s no blood in that (Act 2, Scene 1, Page 8).” This proves that Brutus didn’t want a massacre or go on a huge killing spree, but to do only what was necessary.
