Student’s Name Professor Course Date Why is Alexander the Great considered the first super hero of western civilization? Is that reputation justified? Why? Why not? Alexander the great is considered the superhero of western civilization because of the many conquests he had and his diplomatic attitude (Callisthenes, and Stoneman 45). Alexander with his army managed to capture the Persian Empire which was the largest at the time, surrounded by mighty kings and battle men and this also revealed the enormous power that he had (Greeen 112). Although Alexander had the ability and the potential to have undue influence on the conquest’s culture, he merely taught them the Greek culture and gave them the freedom to choose to absorb it instead of forcing it on them (Jarus). Alexander followed Aristotle teachings and his mannerism which shaped his values. Alexander also learned how to ride a horse and fight with endurance through Leonidas of Epirus, his mother’s relative (Jarus). In 338 BCE Soon after King Phillip 11 assassination, Alexander successfully led the army into the Battle of Charone and managed to defeat the Greek city (Green 111).Alexander led his army into acquiring more states such as the city of Sidon, Syria, Egypt and even renamed them Alexandria (Jarus). A superhero is one who has extraordinary superior powers exceeding those of others. While indeed Olympus had mentioned to him that he was conceived by the power of the supreme god Zeus, there is no documented proof to indicate that he was indeed superhuman. Alexander was the son of Philip, the king and as he grew up, he was able to learn from the king and gather prompts relevance for his tenure (Jarus). Besides, Alexander was molded from such an early age on how to be a great leader and a warrior, and hence it was his father’s effort that he turned out great and not his inborn
In conclusion, Alexander the Great wasn’t great because he didn’t care for other people, didn’t show leadership or any smarts. Many may say that he was an amazing person who did incredible things with the support of the people. However, if you look closely at his actions you could clearly see his reasoning of greed and power. He killed many innocent people to make his dream of controlling the world come true. Before giving someone a title or name it’s important that we make sure it makes sense and fits their
Alexander the Great was one of the greatest military minds of all times. He was King of Macedonia and conqueror of the Persian Empire. Aristotle taught Alexander about the Iliad and other classic novels. In a single week Alexander crushed Illyrians and Thebes, which had revolted. He took the cities by storm and spared only the temples of gods and the house of a poet.
Lastly, Alexander was an incredibly poor sport when it came to his victories over other cities and/or countries. There are multitudes of people who think of Alexander the great as an outstanding leader and respectful
Alexander the Great is great because of his remarkable achievement which helped to create a long lasting legacy. Alexander started to build his empire in 334 BCE after taking the new role as the king. It only took eleven years to build an empire that was large and lasted several years. In addition, the empire Alexander created stretched over 2,200,000 square miles becoming bigger than the United States (Alexander’s Empire Doc. A) (Alexander’s Legacy Doc, E). This proves that Alexander the Great is great because although the process was eleven long years to make a strong empire, Alexander wasn’t willing to give up and
Alexander the Great is hailed, by most historians, as “The Great Conqueror” of the world in the days of ancient Mesopotamia. “Alexander III of Macedon, better known as Alexander the Great, single-handedly changed the nature of the ancient world in little more than a decade. Alexander was born in Pella, the ancient capital of Macedonia in July 356 BCE. His parents were Philip II of Macedon and his wife Olympias. Philip was assassinated in 336 BCE and Alexander inherited a powerful yet volatile kingdom. He quickly dealt with his enemies at home and reasserted Macedonian power within Greece. He then set out to conquer the massive Persian Empire” (Web, BBC History). It is important to note, which will maybe explain his brutal actions, that Alexander was only twenty years old when he became the king of Macedonia. “When he was 13, Philip hired the Greek philosopher Aristotle to be Alexander’s personal tutor. During the next three years Aristotle gave Alexander training in rhetoric and literature and stimulated his interest in science, medicine, and philosophy, all of which became of importance in Alexander’s later life” (Web, Project of History of Macedonia). “In, 340, when Philip assembled a large Macedonian army and invaded Thrace, he left his 16 years old son with the power to rule Macedonia in his absence as regent, but as the Macedonian army advanced deep into Thrace, the Thracian tribe of Maedi bordering north-eastern Macedonia rebelled and posed a danger to the country. Alexander assembled an army, led it against the rebels, and with swift action defeated the Maedi, captured their stronghold, and renamed it after himself to Alexandropolis. Two years later in 338 BC, Philip gave his son a commanding post among the senior gener...
The conquest of Alexander the great has significant importance in contest of expanding the empire so massively and also introducing the Greek culture, and religion beyond the border. The military campaigns that was lead my Alexander the great had not only found the new cities and expanded the existed one to the place where it was unknown to the Greek world. But the conquest had also given the chance of expedition of discovery and spread of Greek culture beyond the border. His important legacy was clearly not a political unity, but instead it was the spread of Greek ideas and tradition across wide area, which later refer as Hellenization. As he was winning the battle and marching forward, he also founded new cities and military
In the archaeological world, a new controversy has been stirred up by King Philip II of Macedon, also known as Alexander the Great’s father, and whether his skeletal remains are in Tomb I or Tomb II at Vergina in Macedonia.
Few historical figures stand out in the same degree as that of Alexander the Great. He was a warrior by 16, a commander at age 18, and was crowned King of Macedon by the time he was 20 years old. He did things in his lifetime that others could only dream about. Alexander single-handedly changed the nature of the ancient world in just over a decade. There were many attributes that made Alexander “Great.” He was a brilliant strategist and an inspired leader; he led by example and was a conqueror at heart. In looking at his early childhood, accession to the throne, conquests, marriage, and death one can see why Alexander the Great is revered in historical contexts as one of the greatest figures of all time.
What’s in a name? If it is a name like Alexander the Great, then a lot. Alexander the Great is still synonymous with great achievement, and rightfully so. Alexander is the greatest military leader of all time, worshipped as a god by the Greeks, the Macedonians, and the Egyptians (Cartledge). One reason for that is that people taught him from a young age how to be a good king and leader. The man who gave him most of these teachings was his father, Philip II. Not only did he groom him into the man that he became, he helped him in other ways. The biggest of these was likely the army that Alexander inherited from his father. Philip revolutionized the army of Macedonia (Worthington). Alexander put that army to use across Asia and Africa. Alexander was tutored by Aristotle, a philosopher who is widely regarded as one of the finest minds of all time (Cartledge). Another influential man in Alexander’s early life was Leonidas, his first tutor. Leonidas taught him to be industrious and military
Alexander The Great , With the courage of a tiger and the ferocity of a Lion, Alexander III swept through Eastern Europe and Asia. Alexander the Great as he would be called was believed to a descendant of the God's! He was a military genius because his battles throughout Asia Minor, against Darius, the King of the Empire of Persia, would bring him fame, fortune, and eternal glorification as the greatest king to have ruled in all of history. The Macedonian king's level of intelligence, the amount of land that he acquired, and the fact that he was a military genius, is some of the most important aspects to the life of Alexander the Great.
Alexander the Great’s legacy was incredible and will always be remember for its greatness. Historians have portrayed him as a high-minded philosopher; however, others view him as a bloody-minded autocrat that is more interested in his own success than a philosophical theory of the common good. (Mckay, John P. Western Society, a Brief History: From Antiquity to Enlightenment. S.l.: Bedford Bks St Martin 'S, 2009. Print. pg.68) He acquired many accomplishments including developing Greek city-states that thrived even after his death, and he conquered many places in battle. His reign and achievements began a new era that would be called the Hellenistic
Throughout history, many great empires have risen up and gained extraordinary amounts of power. These empires gain power through the expansion and the conquest of land and expanding territory. However, in history, it is clear that not all great empires last. The Persian Empire is one of the great empires, which rise to power and then decline gradually over time. The Persian Empire fell due to a number of reasons such as bad leadership and poor military tactics; however, the drastic one of all was caused by one man, Alexander the Great. Alexander the Great was the king of Macedonia and the Greek army after his father Philip II died. His accomplishments at such a young age sets him apart from every other king
...here are few people in history that can claim the military prowess, uncanny political maneuvering, and the overall lasting effect of the dissemination of a particular culture such as Alexander. Alexander’s exploits led to the spread of the Greek culture throughout Asia and Africa. They even went so far as to impact the Romans who dominated Hellenistic Egypt. He left in his wake and expansion of territory and commerce, with expanded trading ports and the exportation of the Greek political system. Christianity emerged with the Hellenization of the Jews and spread throughout Hellenized gentile communities. It seems impossible to catalogue every impact of Alexander’s empire. In the end, I have to conclude that Alexander does ‘fully deserve’ the title of “the Great.”
Alexander was no different from the rest. Not only did he made sure none of his conquered Alexandrian nations were out of line but also “Terrif[ied] the rest of Greece into obedience.” He knew that if he was not merciless and unrelenting other nations would not fear him but also put him at risk of his own nation 's rising up against him. Given his reputation, the campaigns of Alexander were not as troublesome. Egypt for example showed no hesitation nor resistance when Alexander arrived. Egypt knew that they would lose it all rather then just lose their power if they had surrendered to Alexander. For those who opposed and resisted Alexander, he went out of the way to humiliate the preexisting leader and as well as kill him whoever he wanted just to assert dominance and strike fear into those who dare challenge
Alexander the Great deserved his title because he extended his massive empire, also naming many cities after himself. Alexander the Great had conquered so much land that he was able to name more than 70 cities after himself and one after his horse. Alexander commemorated his conquests by founding dozens of cities (usually built up around previous military forts) which he named Alexandria. I feel that if you are able to name 70 cities after you, your truly great. Also, Alexander was a great conqueror, in 13 short years he amassed the largest empire in the entire ancient world — an empire that covered 3,000 miles. And he did this without the benefit of modern technology and weaponry. Alexander had created the biggest empire ever, even today. He did so without guns. He used spears, shields and arrows to conquer 3,000 miles. He also did this on foot and horse over just 13 years. Even today it would be hard to conquer that much land in 13 years. This is truly an amazing accomplishment. After three grueling years of warfare and three decisive battles, Alexander smashed the Persian armies at the Tigris River and conquered the mighty Persian Empire, including the legendary city of Babylon. The Persian army was the best army at the time, they had been the army to beat. Alexander slowly but surely had
