This paper will hopefully compare and contrast what I think are the two most powerful commercial big box retail companies in America, Walmart and Target. For both companies their planning, organizing, leading and controlling capabilities put them both in at a dominating advantage. Not only with their employees but also with their consumers and most importantly keep a significant upper hand on other commercial big box retail companies in America. Walmart was founded in 1962 by Sam Walton an American businessman and entrepreneur, his first store Walmart store opened in 1962 in Arkansas; he has also launched Sam’s Club which opened its doors in 1980 in Oklahoma. Many factors influence Walmart's strategic, tactical, operational and contingency planning. In Walmart's strategic planning stage, they are highly regarded as visionaries and one thing that Walmart can pride themselves on is the fact that they develop their planning processes that enables the company to understand where they want to go, how they want to get there, and the goals they must focus on along the way to drive this plan. Walmart's drive to always make sure that they are first and foremost a value driven company is one thing that has never lost focus. Walmart continues to push the value button by leveraging the size of the company to force vendors for better costs of goods which enabled them to maintain its image as value driven. Part of Walmart's tactical planning was to figure out how to get customers to buy more products once they were in the store. This helps them to assist the staff in achieving the company's goals and also accomplishing their personal or career goals which can be powered by motivation, communication, department dynamics, and department leadership. At Walmart the leadership management contains a mixture of controls and standards with a certain degree of freedom for the employees to be able to test new managerial methods and continue to innovate for improvement of their managerial style. The management strategy is built within teams and the leaders go through the process of working with their team members. It appears that Mr. Walton had introduced some of these basic concepts of management which were popular with employees. Walmart offers stock options and store discounts to its employees to help solidify the importance of management leadership. Mr. Walton believed that teams will always do better than individuals hence; Walmart has always tried their best to make the employees happy and since happy employees can make happy customers and more sales Walmart will bring in. As I have outlined in the charts below, there are various similarities and differences between Wal-Mart and Target. Wal-Mart is Target’s primary competitor, and vice versa. Wal-Mart has a strong market presence in its global markets and has a diverse range of products and services that are affordable and available in stock. Target, on the other hand, does not have a strong market presence or efficient product supply; however, Target’s physical environment and innovative products further the brand’s image and value. Wal-Mart as we know it today evolved from Sam Walton’s goals for great value and great customer service. Mr. Walton’s competitors thought his idea that a successful business could be built around offering lower prices and great service would never work. Mr. Walton also credited the rapid growth of Wal-Mart not just to the low costs that attracted his customers, but also to his associates. He relied on them to give customers the great shopping experience that would keep them coming back. Sam shared his vision for the company with associates in a way that was nearly unheard of in the industry. He made them partners in the success of the company, and firmly believed that this partnership was what made Walmart great.
Our decision is to invest in Wal-Mart. The choice for Wal-Mart is on the basis that their functional-level strategy is really robust, nevertheless of the fact that they do not treat their employees well. The discount retail industry is substantial in size and is constantly experiencing growth and change. The top competitors compete both nationally and internationally. There is extensive competition on pricing, location, store size, layout and environment, merchandise mix, technology and innovation, and overall image. The market is definitely characterized by economies of scale. Top retailers vertically integrate many functions, such as purchasing, manufacturing, advertising, and shipping. Large scale functions such as these give the top competitors a significant cost advantage over small-scale competition.

Walmart stands by the mission statement “We save people money so they can live better.” Walmart is known for is super low prices, and they compete with anyone who tries to enter their market. Albertson’s goal is to fill every shopping cart to as full capacity as possible, as well as getting to know their customers a lot better. They have installed have installed a $50 million NCR Teradata where house in order to analyze customer data, and what type of products certain customers primarily purchase. They then plan to use their customer loyalty cards, so that they can match individual buying preferences against store inventories. Also through technology this data is available for analysis minutes after customers leave the store. This is a very valuable resource, because now Albertson’s may be able to reach its goal of having the right products, on the right shelves, at the right time.

It has also extended its operations to many international countries. It runs its retail stores in two forms: Sam’s Club and Wal-Mart Stores. The Sam’s Club sells assorted product lines such as hardwares, electronics, jewelry, and to mention a few. The first Wal-Mart store opened in July of 1962 in Rogers, Arkansas by Sam Walton who believed that the future of retailing was in discounting and to avoid competing with established giants like Sears and Woolworth, Wal-Mart’s stated out of the large cities in the beginning and this strategy help avoid competition, while in rural areas Wal-Mart began growing their customer base by offering ways to save money and shorter travel distance, Sam Walton felt the best way to make customers happy was to provide the low prices every day (Farhoomand, 2006). The company needed to continually find ways to control the operating costs so the savings would then be passed on to Wal-Mart customers in the form of lower prices than the competitors. Walton was opposed to having any kind of employee unions for its company and saw them as a disruption and an inconvenience (Farhoomand, 2006). The continued search for lower prices made him aware of business related travel cost, Wal-Mart executives stayed in low cost hotels when they traveled and the cost related to the services provided by suppliers, Wal-Mart helped suppliers improve operations and efficiency to produce lower cost. Walton wanted the suppliers to correct any nonessential or insufficiencies existing in their business structures as a way of gaining lower prices and higher value products for its Wal-Mart stores. To further push savings Wal-Mart forced cost down by eliminating the middleman and buying directly from the manufacturers. This cost saving also applied to executive salaries Walton felt providing employees with stock options, training opportunities, and allow employees to grow and develop would be a better way to engage and involve them in his vision (Farhoomand, 2006).
Walmart has made it a necessity to have a strong frontline that is focused and ready to help, serve, and support its pears to help meet customer needs. Respect for an individual can go a long way. So Wal-Mart can be an industrial leader for the world of shoppers with an eye for lower affordable prices, company decision makers would continue it's systematic strategies that it's founder and president established years ago.
