With over 9 years as a fire officer for the city of Waco Fire Department, analyzing situations is an essential skill to keep your crew, the public, and yourself safe. Prioritizing daily activities or making the decision to work or not work a patient in cardiac arrest on a medical emergency, a quick analysis of the situation drives a fire officers’ decisions. I have always based my decisions on how I would act if it were my family. Four years ago, an arsonist plagued the city burning vacant houses. Correctly sizing up the structure involved and analyzing to determine our mode of operation. Vacant houses pose many dangers, due to their lack of maintenance. Vacant houses are not always apparent during an initial size up. Homeless persons …show more content…
Incidents that such as motor vehicle collisions that required extrication tools to gain access to the patient was coded as a motor vehicle accident with injuries and not a motor vehicle accident with extrication. When I questioned the officer, who filled out the report he stated: “all we did was pop the door open.” I answered him by explaining the actions were consistent with an extrication and by not coding correctly, the department loses an extrication on our incident reporting. To fix the problem all officers and acting officers will be required to complete the online National Fire Academy Course National Fire Incident Reporting Systems 5.0 self-study online. This course will give all officers and acting officers a solid foundation to start from when entering reports properly. Battalion chiefs will be required to review incident reports for thoroughness and completeness. The result will be to have quality data that can be utilized by fire administration and an accurate reflection of the fire department …show more content…
Several criteria were used outside of fit, finish, comfort, and ease of use. Being a larger department, we have working SCBA shop that is utilized by other departments within the city and outside agencies such as the county sheriff’s department. Having the ability to repair and maintain our own functioning SCBA shop is valuable to the efficiency of our department in terms of reduced downtime per SCBA and financial cost of having an outside vendor replicate these functions. Outside agencies also utilize our SCBA shop, so our decision will have a large impact if or when we change
By nature, the civil service hiring process gives no preference to candidates who have received training in their prospective field. No matter what a candidate’s level of fire training, they will be required, upon hire, to attend the Ohio Fire Academy to obtain (or re-obtain) their 240-hour State Of Ohio firefighting certification. This means that fire science students aspiring to join CFD will duplicate their efforts. With over 6,000 applicants in 2011 the odds of obtaining a position at CFD seem slim. The odds of obtaining a position at Columbus Fire might seem unrealistic to some, but I believe that my research will show that there are plenty of reasons why so many people want to work for Columbus Fire.
In the case, “Facing a Fire” prepared by Ann Buchholtz, there are several problems and issues to identify in determining if Herman Singer should rebuild the factory due to a fire or retire on his insurance proceeds. I believe that this case is about social reform and self-interest. I think that Singer needs to ask himself, what is in the firm’s best economic interests. There are several things to question within this case, what should Herman Singer do and why, should he rebuild the factory or begin retirement, if he rebuilds, should he relocate the firm to an area where wages are lower and what provisions, if any, should Singer make for his employees as well as for the community?
The National Alliance to End Homelessness (NAEH) has created a federal policy design to aid the homeless and spread awareness of the situation. Their main concern was to enhance the ability of certain programs to prevent and end homelessness for low-income families. Providing cheap and affordable housing is obviously a major factor in helping to curb homelessness, yet it is still inadequate in dealing with the root issues (National Alliance to End Homelessness, 2012). However, these policies are not making any progress because homelessness is still on the rise. All through the San Fernando Valley there is a considerable lack of space in hostels and housing accommodations where a homeless person can find shelter. There are waiting lists that may go on for months or even years, with little hope of getting shorter. The Los Angeles County needs to invest more money on permanent supportive housing, such as houses and apartments, for the homeless so that they can live better
There are an estimated 2,981 homeless people in San Antonio each day. Out of these, 1,243 were unsheltered and a staggering 31% of those are people with families. In addition, the average age of a homeless child in San Antonio is 6 years old. An overall picture shows that homelessness has dropped nearly four percent from 2012 to 2013. Further, an average of 610,042 people are homeless across the United States on any given night. “Of that number, 36 percent – 222,197 people – were in families, representing a drop of 7 percent for that group” (Chappell, 2013, p. #). More than a third of these people were not found in shelters, abandoned buildings, cars, or under bridges. Although, there has been a small decline in homelessness, it’s still necessary to drastically change these statistics by solving the causes of homelessness. Sleeping in vacant buildings and under bridges is unacceptable. These statistics are very alarming and a solution needs to be found.
Homelessness is one of the biggest issues society (Unites States) faces today. Homelessness is caused by lack of affordable housing, economic situations and decline in federal funding for low income families and the mentally ill. A homeless person is defined as an individual who lacks housing (without regard to whether the individual is a member of a family) including an individual whose primary residence during the night is a supervised public or private (shelters) facility that provides temporary living accommodations and an individual who is a resident in transitional housing. This definition of housing is used by the U.S Department of Healt...
In 1973, one of the most influential reports to ever come out of the fire service was created. This report would change the fire service forever and still to this day have a great impact on the way things are done in the fire service. One of the most impacted sectors within the fire service is the way firefighters perceive and implement fire prevention strategies and techniques. This report was called “America Burning” and was published by the National Commission on Fire Prevention and Control. The report was sent directly to the president of the United States of America, who at the current time was Richard
Mental health in the fire service is an upcoming problem, but has been occurring for years without firefighters even knowing it. Specifically post-traumatic stress disorder known as PTSD and firefighter suicides are the main issues that have a large impact in the fire service. This outline will lay out the main points that are a result, impact, or other subjects in relation to the two main issues above. Firefighter deaths are rising rapidly, members of the fire service need to be educated on PTSD and suicide to provide treatment before another devastating event occurs in result of the issues effects.
Homelessness is a problem that happens in many different countries around the world. Definitions of homelessness are defined in different meanings by different people. However, the Stewart B. McKinney Act defines a homeless person as “ one who lacks a fixed permanent nighttime residence or whose nighttime residence is a temporary shelter, welfare hotel, or any public or private place not designed as sleeping accommodations for human beings” (McNamara 1025). It is impossible to find out exactly the number of homeless; however, the researchers can do a study to estimate that number. Based on different statistics from different researchers, the homeless population in America has been increasing as “an alarming rate” (Markos and Lima). Therefore, even though America is one of the most powerful countries in the world, homelessness, which has many common causes, has always been a big problem in society.
Homelessness in the United States has been an important subject that the government needs to turn its attention to. There has been announced in the news that the number of the homeless people in many major cities in the United States has been increasing enormously. According to United States Interagency Council on Homelessness reported that there was an estimation of 83,170 individuals have experienced chronic homelessness on the streets of the United States’ streets and shelters on only a single night of January 2015, which is a small decrease of only 1% from the previous year (People Experiencing Chronic Homelessness, n.d.). The United States must consider this subject that most of the people underestimate it and not pay attention
Firefighters are more than friends. You can't fight fires with friends. To fight fires you need a brotherhood. The men and women of the fire service across the globe consider each other family, this is one of the grand traditions of the fire department. Firefighters are constantly looking out for one another, thinking about the things they do and how it may affect the other’s lives and safety. Life safety is of the highest priority in the business of fire rescue. To achieve a safety standard there are many tasks that fire personnel are expected to carry out, for both a personal and a team related purpose. One of these tasks is the daily inspection of the fire apparatus upon arrival to the fire station. This task is with most certainty the most essential process that fire personnel are responsible for in order to get through the shift safely and efficiently.
Greed is the root to evil or at least the motivation behind some corporations making a good, ethical decision. The Ford Motor Company fell into a trap of greed that would cost many human lives. Before the disaster of the Pinto Fires, Ford had a reputation as being the safety pioneer in the automobile industry with additions such as the seat belts. However, as the invention of small cars began to take emerge Ford began to loose market shares to the foreign market. Ford had to do something and quick.

Being a police officer comes with an immense amount of responsibility. Officers play a very important role that encompasses duties concerning the enforcement of laws, keeping order, and preventing crime. Through these obligations officers have to continually interact with the community and are expected to respond to all situations that may arise while on duty. When officers carry out these responsibilities, individuals expect them to have morals, values, and principles when making decisions regarding the enforcement of the laws. The environment is constantly changing which influences the conduct of individuals and how officers will respond to that behavior (Gaines & Kappeler, 2015). Police officers are considered
