Volvo began the challenge of big data in 2006 when they formed a partnership with the Teradata Corporation and began to build their first data warehouse and change their process and IT infrastructure to create and more responsive, scalable and accurate information system. They entered into cloud technology to continue a marketing campaign involving the Twilight movie series and their customers. The films’ use of Volvo cars led to a tremendous increase in internet traffic causing slowdowns and failures on their networks. To avoid future breakdowns and initiate a contest involving a video game, Volvo turned to the cloud. “In an effort to address its needs for a cost-effective infrastructure that provided the ability to quickly scale up to handle a high volume of traffic and that would also serve a global audience with high performance, Volvo chose to implement a cloud-based solution.” 1 More recently, Volvo partnered with Ericsson to create a cloud based service beneficial for the consumer, the company and other community partners. “Drivers and passengers will be able to access applications for information, navigation, and entertainment from a screen in the car. At the same time, Volvo Cars will be able to open parts of the platform to other players in the eco-system of the automotive industry.” 2 In both cases Volvo recognized the incredible flexibility and affordability utilizing the cloud to engage and serve their customer base in unique ways that were not possible with their previous IT infrastructure. According to Lisa Arthur, big data is as powerful as a tsunami, but it’s a deluge that can be controlled. In a positive way it provides business insights and value. Big data is data that exceeds the processing capacity of conventional database systems. It is a collection of data from traditional and digital sources inside and outside a company that represents a source of ongoing discovery and analysis. The data is too big, moves to fast, or doesn’t fit the structures of the database architecture. Daily, we create 2.5 quintillion bytes of data. In the last couple years we have created 90% of data we have in the world. This data comes from many places like climate information, social media sites, pictures or videos, purchase transaction records, cell phone GPS signals, and many more places. From the beginning of recorded time through 2003 users created 5 billion gigabytes of data. 2011, the same amount was created every couple days. 2013, we created that same amount every ten minutes. Some users prefer to constrain big data into digital inputs like web behavior and social network interactions. The data doesn’t exclude traditional data that is from product transaction information, financial records and interaction channels.
Companies like Google, Tesla and Nissan, among others, have announced over the past few years that their companies are trying to develop self-driving or autonomous cars [Ref. 1 and 2]. Self-driving cars can provide many benefits to the average consumer. Studies have shown that because computers can react and process information many times faster than a human being, crashes on streets and roads can be decreased with quick and consistent evasion maneuvers by the autonomous car. They can also help maximize fuel economy by calculating the most direct and fastest routes. When the driving of an autonomous car demonstrates that the computer can safely and reliably transport the passengers to their destination, this frees up the passengers to do other things that they would not normally be able to do if they were driving the car manually. For this reason, self-driving cars can help maximize productivity of their passengers.
