Volunteering is an essential part of society; individuals coming together to complete everyday tasks to better support the work and development of society and a noble cause. From leading the charge of a local Relay for Life, to packing and loading boxes of groceries to building a house or walking dogs at the dog shelter; volunteers are irreplaceable in nearly every capacity they serve. Volunteer and human resource management is vital to the development and continuation of a strong program of volunteers. As a hopeful school district administrator, I can utilize the district website to highlight volunteering opportunities. Some information I would need to include would be positions, jobs, expectations, cost, background checks among other requirements deemed necessary. It is important that in a fast paced society, I can meet the needs of others and be accommodating to them. The web, provides quick connections to information; a website is a great domain for hosting and sharing such information. Volunteer management must be founded on the concepts of management in and of itself. ‘‘Management is the process of working with and through others to achieve organizational objectives in a changing environment. Central to this process is the effective and efficient use of limited resources’’ The article identifies eight fundamental management functions that are applicable to volunteer program oversight. Those included, planning for the future and the services an organization offers and decision making authority for the organization, which would evaluate different courses of action for which the organization serves. Organizing and staffing are also important, as they establish the roles of each member of the administrative team and the people which fulfill those duties.
