Research articles, even when discussing the same issue or topic, can vary greatly in their opinions, method of research, and purpose for publication. When researching, it is important to keep an open mind to the many possible nuances of a topic, and realize that there are multiple viewpoints for each. The two opposing journals I acquired my research from were Volta Review and Sign Language Studies. The articles from these journals each give a unique perspective on Deaf people, from both the Hearing and Deaf lens, on the most successful way for Deaf people to communicate. It begins by describing this auditory-verbal therapy, using technology and focusing completely on “listening, rather than looking,” ( or signing). A large portion of this article is dedicated to explaining the study performed. The researchers evaluated the speech and language skills of children with either cochlear implants or hearing aids, before and after speech-language therapy. The article describes the different participants in detail, and the specific testing they underwent, as well as the therapy techniques they experienced. The authors then detail the different Auditory-Verbal Therapy techniques, which are as follows: “Focused Audiological Management and Immediate Fitting of Appropriate Hearing Technology; Present the Auditory Stimulus as the Main Sensory Input; Provide Early, Intense (Re)habilitation; Adopt a Family-Centered Approach; Teach Language and Speech through Listening; Integrate Listening into Every Aspect of Life; and Promote Placement in Mainstream Classrooms.” The results conclude that the therapy did have a positive correlation to the children’s speech and language improvement, but the authors admitted that results varied greatly and therapy was an ongoing, long
... Interpreters there to help also. The people who should read this book are families that have been identified to have deafness. This is a helpful resource for them to be able to see that things have changed and help is available. Most of all I think that everyone should read this book, and be able to see what the deaf community is about. So they do not judge them because they are different. Society tells us all that we have to be the same, look the same, sound the same, and do all the same things, no one can be different or they are looked down on. This book says that it is okay to be different. I really think that this book put all these things into a different perspective for me and will for other families that might come across this situation themselves.
While the benefits for the hearing are great, there are better benefits for those who are Deaf. Jarashow stated that it was essentially frowned upon if a Deaf child was using sign instead of trying to use what ability they had to hear. This seems counterproductive and if they emphasized more on teaching Deaf children ASL, there would be better outcomes for them in the future. Just like members of other minorities, such as Hispanics and African-Americans, Deaf people experience some of the same oppression and hardships. Although the attempts to "fix" members of and obliterate the DEAF-WORLD are not as highly publicized as problems with other minorities, they still exist. Throughout time, hearing people have been trying to destroy the DEAF-WORLD with the eugenics movement, the mainstreaming of Deaf children into public hearing schools, and cochlear implants.

The purpose of Application of a Motor Learning Treatment for Speech Sound Disorders in Small Groups was to evaluate the effectiveness of motor-learning based therapy, also called Concurrent Treatment, within groups of up to four elementary public school students with disordered articulation, normal language, and normal hearing. The authors of this paper recognized that while many studies have been done to determine the efficacy of students in individualized therapy settings, few studies had been done to look at therapy within small groups. Therefore, the researchers tested twenty-eight 6-9 year old children within a small group using Concurrent Treatment. The children were able to acquire their targeted speech sounds within 40 30-minute sessions (20 hours over 20 weeks).
At Clarke I currently teach in a self contained classroom of four year old children that are deaf and hard of hearing who are learning to listen and speak. I assist under the direction of the classroom teacher in planning, preparing and executing lessons in a listening and spoken language approach. I have the opportunity to record, transcribe and analyze language samples on a daily basis. In addition, I facilitate the child's communication in the classroom and ensure carryover of activities between the classroom and individual speech therapy sessions. Every week I contribute and participate in meetings with the educational team to discuss each child's progress using Cottage Acquisition Scales of Speech, Language and Listening (CASSLLS).
My essay topic is the language development of deaf infants and children. In my opinion, this is an important topic to discuss, due to the lack of public knowledge concerning the deaf population. Through this essay, I wish to present how a child is diagnosed as having a hearing loss (including early warning signs), options that parents have for their children once diagnosed (specifically in relation to education of language), common speech teaching methods used today, typical language development for these children, and some emotional, social, and mental difficulties faced by the deaf child and the child’s family that have an immense effect on the child’s education.

Over seven million people just in the US have some sort of speech disorder. Just think about how many it is around the world! There are many different types of speech disorders, such as: stuttering, lisping and, mumbling, to name a few. Many of these disorders become noticeable during early childhood, however, this is not the only time a speech disorder may occur. Many people that suffer from strokes or other traumatic accidents encounter struggles with speech through their recovery. Deaf individuals do not consider themselves having an impairment, handicap, or any type of disability. The deaf community does not see their hearing impairment as a disability but as a culture which includes a history of discrimination, racial prejudice, and segregation. According to an online transcript,“Through Deaf Eyes” (Weta and Florentine films/Hott productions Inc., 2007) there are thirty-five million Americans that are hard of hearing. Out of the thirty-five million an estimated 300,000 people are completely deaf. There are ninety percent of deaf people who have hearing parents (Halpern, C., 1996). Also, most deaf parents have hearing children. With this being the exemplification, deaf people communicate on a more intimate and significant level with hearing people all their lives. “Deaf people can be found in every ethnic group, every region, and every economic class” (Weta and Florentine films/Hott productions Inc., 2007). From a deafness-as-defect mindset, many well-meaning hearing doctors, audiologists, and teachers work passionately to make deaf children speak; to make these children "un-deaf." They try hearing aids, lip-reading, speech coaches, and surgical implants. In the meantime, many deaf children grow out of the crucial language acquisition phase. They become disabled by people who are anxious to make them "normal." Their lack of language, not of hearing, becomes their most severe handicap. While I support any method that works to give a child a richer life, I think a system which focuses on abilities rather than deficiencies is far more valuable. Humans these days take electricity for granted. We don’t truly understand what life was like without it. Most young adults will tell you their life does not depend on electricity, but they aren’t fooling anyone. They all know that their life depends on electricity; whether it’s television, their phone, Google, or the lights in their house. We need to stop taking those things for granted and give credit where credit is due. That is why I chose to write about the scientists who contributed to the discovery of electricity, which then helped modern scientists fuel the electricity phenomenons we now have today.
