Visit To A Prison Tour

During the trip to the Patuxent prison I learned numerous things regarding the correctional system. Although, I previously had an idea of how prisons were being operated it was different actually seeing the prison operations in person. The prison was in better condition than I imagined. It was also much calmer than I expected for it to be a maximum security prison. I assumed that the prison would be in the absolute worst condition imaginable. The prison was not perfect but it definitely was not as bad as I expected it would be. There were various things that stood out to me during the prison visit. I say that because after visiting the prison I have a different outlook on the correctional system. As I previously stated, there is a difference between reading about a subject and actually seeing for yourself. The tour allowed me to be more grateful for my freedom. Sometimes you can take for granted certain things throughout life like eating and family time. I don’t take for granted certain things anymore. During the tour we saw the show room, the room was not really big and inmates only get about 30 mins to eat. In addition, the food that is served there is not very good. For that reason, I don’t take eating meals on my own schedule for granted anymore. I can not imagine someone else telling me constantly when I have to eat breakfast, lunch, and dinner. Also, I value family more. Family has always been important to me. However, it is different when you can only see your family for 1 hour once a week. This trip allowed me to be thankful that I am not in prison. It also made me realize that prison is not the place for me. I would recommend this trip to others that are interested in criminal justice. I believe that everyone should tour a prison at least once in their lifetime. It will allow you to be more knowledgeable about the operations of the correctional
