With everything in life we have the good and bad, the easy and the hard, the weak and the strong, or the smart and the ignorant. The symbol of life is like a great big ying yang sign. Sometimes women have a greater advantage over men on certain things just as men have an advantage over women on other things. Virginia Woolf shows us in her novel Orlando, that there are advantages and disadvantages in being either man or women. She used a fictional character named Orlando who goes back and forth, trying to reason with the fact that he became a woman and had to live in a society where men ruled and women had many more restrictions and expectations than men did. He met this beautiful Russian Princess that he called Sasha. Though he was engaged at the time, he still pursued Lady Sasha and embarrassed his ex-fiancé and her family. This ended the engagement for him, which might have had a better outcome then his relationship with Sasha did. After spending days together and being inseparable, Orlando and Sasha discussed running off together. When they were supposed to meet, Orlando waited and waited for his love, but she never came. He then ran to find her ship and realized that she had sailed away with a seaman. He was so blinded by her attraction that he was not thinking straight and lost his fiancé and his heart. Her struggles began when she realized she couldn’t swim to save herself dressed in all that clothing. She would have to depend on others for her protection. It was important for her to ware such bulky clothing because if anyone were to see her legs they may have a heart attack or fall to their death in the water. One day, when Orlando stomped her foot, her dress came up and a sailor was able to see her leg and he fell into the water. He did not die but Orlando thought he could have. She then knew that she must keep covered. It was inappropriate and not accepted for women to show their legs. Not only were women to be exquisitely appareled, but they were to be obedient, chaste and scented as well. Women had to respect the opinions of men no matter what it may be. Those expectations were extreme for Orlando and she knew she had to be
