Virgil's Political Propaganda

Virgil has an interesting narrative within the Aeneid, and creates a hidden subtext that the reader doesn’t necessarily always pick up on unless he is looking for. I also feel that book six, where the majority of the political foreshadowing is done, is a political tool instead of a needed book for the plot of the poem. One of the more prominent examples that is both interesting and important to the Aeneid and its plot is the political propaganda and atmosphere within the opening half of the poem. This is an important part of the Aeneid as it subtly explains the political atmosphere to the reader of the poem. The way that Virgil creates this political atmosphere within the Aeneid is well written and I found that it is only found within textual analysis and reading between the lines. The most important part within the first half of the poem, that I believe, with politics is found in book six when Aeneas goes into the underworld with his father. “They are the spirits owed a second body by the Fates. They drink deep of the river Lethe’s currents there, long drafts that will set them free of cares, oblivious forever.” (6.823-826). This quote from the stanza that Anchises’ is talking to Aeneas is the opening part for the reader to start understanding the political affect that Aeneas will have once he creates the building blocks for Rome to become such an empire. The quote from above shows the reader that the people that Anchises’ is going to show Aeneas will be people that are owed a second life and that they will do great things. This is important to the plot of the Aeneid and to the reader as it helps them fully understand the Roman history that Virgil is currently creating. “So come, the glory that will follow the songs of Troy thr... ... middle of paper ... ...writing the Aeneid. Furthermore, the ability of creating the political atmosphere while still keeping the writing within the historical recollection of Aeneid and his trip to Rome is a very important quality that Virgil accomplished. The ability of the political foreshadowing that Virgil wrote within the poem and between the lines help the reader understand the atmosphere within the time of Caesar Augustus and Virgil. The addition of politics within the Aeneid is very important as it continues to support the reader throughout the future books of the epic and helps the reader know the back-story of Rome and the Trojan people. I feel that the political foreshadowing that Virgil added, although not important to the plot, was important to the initial audience of the poem and helped form the future of Rome and created the history that many Romans felt that they lacked.
