Victor, a small 12 year old Chinese-Australian boy arrived home after a tedious day at school. He felt tired after a day of concentrating on linear equations and Chinese poetry. Little did he know that his world was about to change dramatically, a change that would cause him to make a decision that would impact countless amounts of patients with cardiovascular disease around the world.

Victor Peter Chang (Chang Yam Him) was born in Shanghai, China in 1936, November 21st to Aubrey Chang and May Chang. He was the oldest of three children. In 1938, when the Japanese was broke out, Victor and his family moved to Hong Kong. In Hong Kong, Victor attended the Kowloon Tong Primary School and continued his education at St. Paul’s Boys College. Then at the age of 12, his mum died of cancer. This heartbreaking event inspired him to become a doctor.

Victor was 16 when his father sent him and his sister to Sydney, Australia. In 1953 Victor finished high school at the Christian Brothers High School in Lewisham. They got married on April the 20th, 1968. The couple had three children. After completing his training in London he moved America and obtained the job of chief resident at the Mayo Clinic, Rochester, Minnesota, United States of America. Victor, now a professionally trained heart surgeon, returned to Australia and the St Vincent’s Hospital in 1972. In 1973 Victor obtained a fellowship of the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons. At 49, Victor received the Advance Australia Award. He performed the first Australian heart-lung transplant only one year later. In that same year he was awarded Companion of the Order of Australia.
