For my concert report, I attended the remarkable performance given by Vicente Amigo at the Duke Performance Center in Durham, NC. I chose Amigo’s concert as I am an avid fan of flamenco music and observed his previous performances on his website prior to his concert. Vicente Amigo was born in Guadalcanal, a small village in Seville, Spain on March 25th, 1967. Vicente grew up and continues to live in Cordoba, Spain as well as Andalusia. Vicente studied the guitar from a young age under greats like Rafael Rodriguez Fernandez and Juan Muñoz Exposito. Since then, Vicente has become a Grammy-winning guitarist and modern flamenco master. The music was full of rhythmic volatility and masterful lyrics. As I glanced around the audience, I realized that there were people from all ethnic groups, from people who seemed to be from different countries. It was evidently clear Vicente’s music was universally renowned and appreciated by people of all cultures. Additionally, from a socio-economic standpoint, it also seemed to be a melting pot for people of all backgrounds. From students garnering their school emblems to loving couples dressed in high fashion to ordinary individuals dressed in everyday clothing, music has no boundaries. Throughout his performance, I thought about how Vicente had been able to bring flamenco music to the global marketplace and by infusing the sounds from other cultures, he is able to bring his music to the intercultural level. Ultimately, Vicente’s concert was amplified by his soulful renditions of his original flamenco pieces which pulled influences from a plethora of different musical genres and along with his exceptional performances by his quintet, they created a musical experience that was one of a
