Serving in positions of ever increasing responsibility within the Veterans Benefits Administration (VBA) and graduating with an advanced degree from the U.S. Army Command and General Staff College (CGSC), has provided me with knowledge and skills and abilities related to the topics of advanced management and organizational principles, practices, planning, and budgetary processes.

Following completion of my studies, I was reassigned from my position as an Assistant Service Center Manager, in field operations, to the Office of Strategic Planning (OSP) in the VBA Central Office. During my tenure in OSP, I served as a Senior Program Analyst, first on the Transformational Initiatives and Future Concepts team, and then as a Senior Program Analyst on the Strategic Planning team. My job duties included producing operational and strategic planning deliverables such a long range and strategic plans in order to improve mission effectiveness and business practices within the organization. In addition, while serving on the strategic planning team, I was selected to represent VBA as a Strategic Planner during VA’s Quadrennial Strategic Planning Process and was an active participant in the development of the future VA Strategic Plan. This afforded me the opportunity to develop knowledge and skills in the strategic planning process at the department level and to gain a greater understanding of how the Veterans Health Administration (VHA), National Cemetery Administration (NCA), and VBA’s long rand and strategic plans, nest within VA’s strategic

The current health care system can be difficult to navigate and often medical centers need management tools to help them develop strategic plans within their organizations. The SWOT-Analysis is one strategic tool that health care centers can use to formulate a roadmap for their organizations. The SWOT-Analysis examines internal capabilities (strengths and weaknesses) and external developments (opportunities and threats) when determining a strategic plan for an organization (Van Wijngaarden, Scholten, & Van Wijk, 2012). Van Wijngaarden et al. (2012) explains for SWOT-Analysis to prove meaningful throughout an organization, it is important for stakeholders to be part of the brainstorming to identify its’ internal capabilities and external developments. However, there are a few drawbacks to the using the SWOT-analysis tool that are important for health care centers to remain cognizant of when developing their strategic blueprints. Helms and Nixon (2010) state the SWOT-Analysis can be vague and too simplistic when developing a strategic course for an organization; it can be difficult to classify variables into the four SWOT quadrants; and no definite strategic path is identified after the SWOT-analysis is completed. For these reasons, they explain it can be helpful to use additional analysis tools in addition to the SWOT-analysis. One such tool the U.S. Army Medical System uses is the balanced-score card. Adaptive leadership is becoming widespread in the United States Army amongst junior officers in leadership positions that require quick thinking and innovation. Leonard Wong discusses how the versatile and unpredictable enemy and situations in Iraq produces adaptable junior officers. These officers are learning to make decisions under chaotic conditions and are becoming more mentally agile. The Army is changing. The Army is transforming its capabilities in the war in Iraq to be effective and successful. General Schoomaker states that we will not accomplish our goals as a nation in the 21st century unless our Army becomes much more agile but with the capacity for long term, sustained level of conflict. The Army is in the process of eliminating its old ways of war, it has to become somewhat of a decathlete. Trained for multiple events across a broad spectrum not just one event like a track athlete.
I am interested in obtaining my masters degree in the field of social work because I am passionate about issues of equality and fairness, and want to be in a position to help out in this area in a constructive and meaningful way. Social workers have the ability to make direct, beneficial changes in people’s lives, often the people who need it the most. It may rarely be world-changing on a macro level, but social work, when done right, can have world changing effects, for the better, on the people it touches.

Organizational changes are constant in both the public and private sector. Some changes are small and easily managed and others are large scale vision changes. With organization-wide changes, such as a redirection in the organizations vision, strong creative leaders are needed to ensure the vision is sold to the employees and that the change is implemented smoothly. The Virginia Department of Corrections (VADOC) has recently changed visions to strengthen the way we create long term public safety. This change in mission and vision statements was a smooth process but has not been implemented without its share of issues.
“An Army leader is any one who by virtue of assumed role or assigned responsibility inspires and influences peoples to accomplish organizational goals. She or He motivates people both inside and outside the chain of command to pursue actions, focus thinking, and shape decisions for the greater good of the organization.1” But for him to do that effectively and efficiently , he has to be prepared, shaped and refined. There are few institutions to prepare such leaders and CGSC is one of those institutions which are mandated, organized and equipped to prepare such leaders. In implementing its mandate, CGSC has programmed ILE common core C 100 to provide foundations for effective leadership development. The lessons covered in this block of instructions are important pillars of leadership development and impact on officers differently depending on the fields/specialties and the level of positions held. This paper therefore attempts to discuss the relevance of critical thinking and problem solving, group decision making, overcoming biases, planning and order production lessons on my future assignment as a logistics staff officer.
