The movie that I chose for this paper was Minority Report. Minority Report is about a policeman who uses technology to be able to stop crimes, particularly murders, from happening. The technology is then turned against him as he is sought for committing a future murder (Minority Report, 2002). The first of the two scenes I will talk about which correlates to information from this class is the main open scene. In this scene, John Anderton uses technology to be able to see the future by means of precogs (psychics) and is portrayed as a means of surveillance (Minority Report, 2002). This is very similar to what we learned in week 6 in this class. Mary Chayko defines vertical surveillance as a means in which a powerful entity, namely the government, “seek to influence, manage, protect, or direct the behavior of a population” (2017, pg. 83). This is exactly what is happening in the movie. Mary Chayko goes on to mention that with vertical surveillance, individuals may not even know that they are being watched (2017). In the movie, there are instances of individuals being arrested even though they have not technically committed a crime. They act completely surprised when the police arrest them for these crimes. In our week 5 lecture, we talked about how technology is used in the health field and how it affects us. Outside of a movie, being able to give someone an eye transplant would be a very big leap forward in medicine. With the advancement of technology to be able to complete this procedure, it would be possible to do more procedures that are currently not possible. With that being said, Minority Report does take place in the year 2054. It is definitely possible that advancements can be made in the next 37 years that would allow doctors and surgeons to be able to give someone and eye
