Vaccinations as a whole, helps fight and prevent diseases in the body. Some sites say that “It is like a training course for the immune system.” When a virus or “foreign invaders” enter the body, like bacteria and other viruses, immune cells produce antibodies to fight these foreign invaders. Here is when vaccines come into play. When vaccines enter a body, the immune creates antibodies as they think that the antigens released from the vaccines are harmful. After this completion occurs in the body and the antibodies are broken down, the immune cells, otherwise known as memory cells, will still stay in the body. This is helpful because whenever the body notices this same antigen again and again, the memory cells will be able to yield more antibodies faster allowing them to attack the “intruders” quicker before it can affect the body. …show more content…
With more and more children taking these shots, some say it would be less likely for their children and a large portion of children to catch a virus or disease. Furthermore, it would help stop the disease from forming and even decrease the spread of an obtainable disease. For example, we now don’t have to take shots for diseases like Smallpox and Polio. This is so because of the impact of vaccines. These diseases aren't even existing because of vaccines eliminating the spread and ending this virus as these diseases decreased by 99% due to vaccinations. The vaccines themselves are meant to be safe and are made of the right substances to fight the right cause. Edward Jenner invented a method to protect against smallpox in the late 1700s. The method involved taking substances from an open wound of someone with small-pox or cow-pox and injecting it into another person’s skin, also called “arm-to-arm inoculation”. The earliest actual documented examples of vaccination date all the way back to the tenth century in China (Lombard, “A brief history of vaccines and vaccinations”). The mention of early vaccination was taken note of by a French scholar, Henri Husson, written in one of his journals (Dictionaire des sciences médicale). The Ottoman Empire Turks also discovered a method of immunization a few centuries later. Lady Montagu of Great Britain, a famous writer and wife of the English ambassador of Istanbul, between 1716 -1718, came across the Turkish vaccine for small-pox. After surviving as a child with small-pox, she insisted her son be vaccinated (Henricy, “Letters of the Right Honourable Lady Wortley Montagu”). When she returned to England, she continued to publicize the Turkish tradition of immunization and spread their methods to the rest of her country. She also had all family members also vaccinated. Vaccines are inactive viruses or bacteria that can’t move or do anything. This helps your immune system to help create an immunity to whatever type of virus or bacteria it is. Then they give you a dose of the real disease or virus so the cells know how it operates. The idea of actively preventing disease has been around for over 1,000 years, but Vaccinations only have been around since 1796. They were originally designed and produced in England by a man called Edward Jenner to prevent smallpox and cowpox. People thought that the vaccines were affective. From there onward people vaccinated their children and themselves.
Vaccines are an integral part of modern preventive medicine. Without vaccines, not only would most malignant epidemics still be around, and the world would also be in a much more polluted era. As immunisers we need to have a thorough understanding of the immune system and the vaccine action. Immunity is the protection and ultimately the response that occurs when a person has been vaccination or has been affected with an infection and ultimately recovered. The immune system consists of millions of white blood cells, these contain the materials that initiate immune responses these being identified as antigens (Brown & Edwards 2010). Antigens exist on the surface of all of the body’s cells, and are unique to each individual that ensures the body is capable to recognize anything that is foreign (Black 2008; Brown & Edwards 2010). By being able to recognize and respond to antigens that are regarded foreign to the body and consequently they stimulate an immune response, the immune system is able to protect itself from harm (Australian Academy of Science 2012).
