“While the truncheon may be used in lieu of conversation, words will always retain their power. Words offer the means to meaning, and for those who will listen, the enunciation of truth. And the truth is, there is something terribly wrong with this country, isn't there? Cruelty and injustice, intolerance and oppression. And where once you had the freedom to object, to think and speak as you saw fit, you now have censors and systems of surveillance coercing your conformity and soliciting your submission. How did this happen? Who's to blame? Well certainly there are those more responsible than others, and they will be held accountable, but again truth be told, if you're looking for the guilty, you need only look into a mirror. War is either not spoken of or is centered around the honor of our country. Scripts are censor-approved and details of stories are changed in order to get a more positive public response. Our media has turned into a game of public relations. The film shows police vans regularly scanning the streets at night; eavesdropping on private conversations inside people’s homes. On the backs of these vans is a phrase that is seen and heard throughout the country – “For Your Protection.” It is no secret that after 911, fear caused our government to limit our 4th amendment rights, as they are continuing to do, 15 years and over 180,000 precious human lives later. Thanks to Edward Snowden, it is no secret that our government is recording and collecting data from our phones, social media, and emails all while using the same reasoning the High Chancellor does in V for Vendetta -- “For our protection.” When will we reclaim our privacy? Or will we just let our rights slip away into nonexistence and secure our future that is depicted in this film?
