The film ‘V for Vendetta’ is a dystopian political thriller directed by James McTeigue. Inside Evey’s torture scene there are many verbal and visual techniques to show the depth and meaning of each technique. The techniques of lighting, camera angles, and dialogue piece together to create and effect of fear and courage. In the opening of this scene an effect of fear is displayed by the character, Evey Hammond. We are guided to feel this way as artificial lighting is exclusively shone on Evey. In comparison, her surroundings are dimly lit or pitch black. This is to unveil the fear encircling Evey’s mind. V on the other hand shows no sign of sympathy for his only possible ally. This is shown by Evey being tortured with her head forcefully held under water. V, under another mask pulls her up and recites her to “tell us where he is” (referring to V himself) with a firm voice she says “I don’t know.” This shows the audience that Evey has finally overcome her fears and is on her first step to courageousness where she could finally break out of her cage. This is a foreshadowing the revolution that will occur in Britain (later shown in the film). The final technique identified is camera angles. An over the shoulder shot is applied on V over Evey’s shoulder, this shows she is on even footing against what she believes to be the government. This shot also shows that Evey can now confidently reply to her captors without a single doubt in her mind as she is now partly ‘free.’ Both techniques work together to create an effect of courage. This is produced by the proficient use of dialogue and camera angles. The dialogue of “I don’t know” in a confident manner truly shows the loyalty and bravery of Evey after both her torture and Valirie’s inspirational autobiography. Combined with the camera technique (over the shoulder), the effect of courage is further emphasised as it is a turning point for both the film and the character, Evey
