Fiction has become quite popular and relevant in today’s society. Because of its widespread influence, it has become very powerful. From reading fiction, I get to experience adventures and ideas that I cannot experience in reality. Fiction makes me use my imagination, something that tends to get used less as one matures. It is important to have something that can inspire one’s imagination as then one can strengthen their creativity and innovation. A novel that has shaped the way I see the world is George Orwell’s 1984. Though it is a work of fiction, it teaches many valuable lessons through the themes in the novel. In English class, we read a variety of works: short stories, a variety of novels, non-fiction articles, poetry, and plays through the work of William Shakespeare. This wide variety of works that we read introduce many ideas and themes. For example, Harper Lee’s To Kill a Mockingbird teaches that everyone deserves equal treatment and that their differences should not degrade them. William Golding’s Lord of the Flies teaches that humans are inherently savage. Shakespeare’s work also teaches many lessons; for example, The Merchant of Venice teaches that love for others will triumph over self-interest, and Macbeth teaches that excessive ambition leads to corruption. In grade 12 English, we read Fifth Business, a Canadian novel. By reading a novel that has a setting in our country and is written by a Canadian author, the novel is serving the Canadian culture. Unlike other courses like math or the sciences, English does not have just one right answer. In English class, we are often asked to express our own opinion on different matters. Because the curriculum offers this freedom of thought, we are given the power of choice in our writing. This opportunity to think critically as an individual is important in a democratic society, which serves our democratic culture well.
