In “Everyday Use” one of the main characters Dee has constructed a new heritage for herself and rejected her actual heritage. Dee fail to realize why she is named Dee which leads her unable to see her family’s legacy of her given name, therefore, she changes her name to Wangero which she believes is more accurate for her African heritage. Double Consciousness occurs when Dee could not figure out her true identity and also when she could not understand her heritage. Being that Dee had a challenging time trying to understand her heritage she instead adopts a new heritage.
