In the story "Everyday Use" the narrator is telling a story about her life and two daughters, who are named Dee and Maggie. The narrator is very strong willed, honest, compassionate and very concerned with the lives of her two daughters. Her daughter Dee is not content with her lifestyle and makes it hard on Maggie and the narrator. The narrator is trying to provide for her family the best way she can. The narrator is alone in raising the two daughters and later sends her daughter Dee to college. The longer the story goes on the more the narrator shows how intelligent and how much she loves her two daughters.
So much so, that she had gone home from college to try to get some old family belongings to put on “display” to try to keep the history alive. Unlike Maggie, Dee didn’t care much of the future, she just cared about the past and taking all sentimental family heirlooms. While reading this there were some animosity toward Dee because of what type of character she was. The animosity was caused by the numerous comments and actions that occurred in the story. She was very selfish, uneducated, and very unappreciative of where she came from. Dee carried herself in a very ridiculous way. Among Dee’s family she is the object of jealousy, awe, and agitation, meanwhile she searches for her purpose and sense of self. After all, she was never told no, so in her mind her options for success were endless. Dee grew up being taught the there was no real issue with society, but once she moved away to college, her perspective on the situation changed dramatically. Alice Walker is a Pulitzer Prize winning, internationally acclaimed author and poet who wrote the much studied short story “Every Day Use,” which was first published in 1973. Ms. Walker is originally from Putnam County, Georgia and was born on February 9, 1944, well before the civil rights movement in the US had begun and at a time when African Americans, particularly in the south endured hardships which would seem almost unimaginable to most young people today. Her family was one of limited means and by most accounts, lived a meager lifestyle as sharecroppers, struggling to get by and provide basic sustenance on a daily basis. By the early 1960s, she had become deeply interested in activism and civil rights not only for African Americans here in the US, but for anyone she viewed as oppressed no matter whom or where they are. Not coincidentally, her life experiences and philosophies are also recognizable in the characters of some of her works. “Every Day Use” (Walker) is one such story which contains many parallels to the author’s real life experiences and exposes the reader, at least in part, to Alice Walker’s background as well as some of her thoughts and views on a range of topics.

The ultimate goal is to achieve the perfect balance of the three areas by understanding how each area works alone and contributes to make the whole.
