During the Classical period, Roman slaves and Indian untouchables were primarily different with some important similarities. They differed in that Roman slaves took all kinds of jobs while untouchables only got jobs considered “impure.’ Additionally, slaves would revolt against romans while untouchables remained tame. However, one similarity is they both were not respected by others. Roman slaves were given jobs that others did not want, however, untouchables were given jobs considered “impure.” Slaves were given any job that their owner wanted them to do. Slaves could do simple tasks, such as dressing their owner, but they could also do tasks such as be gladiators in gladiatorial combat. Untouchables, however, had a very small pool of jobs
they could do. Most of their jobs were jobs not wanted by the upper classes, which included things such as cleaning up dead bodies. The reason untouchables had such a small pool of jobs is because their job pool is mostly determined by their religion. Upper Classes would often reject tedious tasks leaving it to the lower class, and eventually the untouchables, who were the lowest. Slaves tended to oppose their owners due to hate and resentment, while untouchables did not revolt whatsoever. Slaves were always treated horribly. Although some owners were kind, most owners were inhumane and abusive, doing things such as being forced into prostitution, or having to fight as a gladiator, caused a rift of hate between slaves and their owners. However, because untouchables just did the job they were supposed to and moved on. The reasons that untouchables did not revolt is because they were bound to their class by religion instead of ownership. Untouchables usually worked hard so that they could be reincarnated into a higher class in their next life, or they converted to Buddhism, as Buddhism did not support the caste system.

In Aristotle's "Justifying Slavery" and Seneca's "On Master and Slave," the two authors express their opposing sentiments on the principles of slavery. While Aristotle describes slavery as predestined inferiority, evidenced greatly by physical attributes, Seneca emphasizes the importance of "philosophical" freedom as opposed to physical freedom. (p. 58). The authors' contrasting views are disclosed in their judgments on the morality of slavery, the degree of freedom all people possess at birth, and the balance of equality between a slave and his master.
African slaves were brought to the America’s by the millions in the 17th and 18th century. The Spanish and British established lucrative slave trades within Africa and populated their new territories with captured and then enslaved Africans. The British brought the slaves to their new colonies in North America to work on the large plantations and the Spanish and Portuguese brought the slaves to South America. Slavery within North and South America had many commonalities yet at the same time differences between the two institutions.
Masters, Slaves, and Subjects. In his book “Masters, Slaves, and Subjects”, Robert Olwell examines the complex relationships and power structures of colonial-era Charles Towne. Charles Towne, as Charleston was known in the years between its founding and its independence from the British Empire, is portrayed by Olwell as dominated by a rigid agrarian slave society which served as an intermediary in a more complex power structure that extended from the royal halls of London to the plantation fields of the Lowcountry. In examining the complicated web of relationships between London and the colony, and Masters and Slaves, Olwell argues that the economic and political structure of Charles Towne was based upon a successive series of carefully-maintained power-based relationships.
Slavery and indentured servitude were the primary means of help for the wealthy in America. Either as a slave or as an indentured servant a person was required to work in the fields maintain crops, as a house servant or as the owner of debtor so chooses. In the novel Slavery by Another Name, by Douglas Blackmon he examines the reconstruction era, which provided a form of coerced labor in a convict leasing system, where many African Americans were convicted on triumphed up charges for decades.
In the Greco-Roman period slavery was not determined “by race, religion, kinds of work, clothing, ownership of property, or formal schooling.” In many cases slaves were treated fairly and were valued. The institution of slavery in the 19th century was vastly different, usually always depraving “the slave of dignity and the slave owner of humanity.” It was “a model…for the most extreme forms of exploitation, otherness, and even social death.” Aside from the oppression of early American slavery, this form of the institution was based on race. In contrast, the slavery of the Greco-Roman period was based in large part on class or social status. In the ancient times slavery was a common and normal thing. In 70 A.D it was estimated that there were slaves in Rome. There were no troubles or controversies over it. Slavery was widespread and most families owned at least one slave. Today there is only one real way to become a slave but in Roman Times (rise of Rome) there were three. 1=Slavery due to crime committed. 2=Not being a Roman citizen. 3=Taken prisoner by Romans. The slave business ensued for the reason that it became a practical and profitable business in the 1600 to1800’s. Many people have not considered the parts they play and how different they may be. The most obvious similarity between the two happens to be their eyes for profit .The men that entered the slave business did it for income. Despite this similarity, there remained three items that the two did not share, status being one. Another being that they had a completely different need of the slaves they dealt with. The final difference is that the slave owners paid for their slaves and the slave Traders took the slaves and sold them to the Owners. Slavery is described as long work days, a lack of respect for a human being, and the inability for a man or a woman to have gainful employment. The slaves were victimized the most for obvious reasons. Next on the list would be the families of both the slave and slave owners. At the bottom of the list would be the slave owners. Slavery does in fact victimize slaves, slave owner and their families by repeating the same cycle every generation.
In conclusion, ancient slavery and modern slavery are similar but different in general. Slaves were usually born into slavery for ancient slavery while sex trafficking victims were captured and forced into slavery. The main purpose of ancient slavery were slave labor and treated worse than dogs, while the main purpose of human trafficking is to gain profit from what sex trafficking victims earn. Also, ancient slavery was legal while sex trafficking is not. Although there are many difference between ancient and modern day slavery, we could still agree that both are extremely dehumanizing and should eliminate slavery on earth.
The experiences of enslaved women differed from the experience of enslaved men in ancient Rome; slavery within ancient Rome can be traced back to the first century BCE and was based primarily on the chattel slave system. Slavery within the ancient roman society was highly normalised as it was considered a part of roman culture. Slavery within ancient Rome was so heavily normalised that it is considered to be described as a “slave society” Joshel (2010, p. 6) states that “For slaves living in the Roman world, there was no outside – no place without slavery and no movement that declared slavery wrong. Slavery was a normal part of life, and this was true not only for the Romans but for every neighbouring ancient culture”. Not only was slavery considered a normal part of Roman life, but it affected a great proportion of the Roman population. According to historian Walter Scheidel (2007, p. 6) “ There were somewhere between 5 to 8 million slaves in the Roman empire, some 250,000 to 400,000 new slaves were required every year to maintain the numbers”. A majority of these figures were men, children and - women; either being enslaved through birth, kidnapping or captured through war. Roman slaves were not seen as victims nor was slavery considered to be a crime at that time, as slavery was considered to be to a ‘natural law of the nations’ as stated by Joshel (2010, p.6) “For the Roman lawyer, slavery is not a crime, and the enslaved are not victims; rather, as Gaius and other Roman jurists nations. Natural law applies to all animals, not only human beings, but it concerns little more than the union of male and female, procreation of children, and their rearing”. The most common use of a slave was to have the around the house to do common tasks such as cleaning the house, washing the clothing, cooking, and taking care of the infants with supervision from the mother. Although these were the major uses of a slave there were a few that also educated and were allowed to teach others what they have learned. Plutarch told a story of a man named Cato that had born a son, but he did not wish that his son to be taught by a lowly servant. He wanted his son to have a good education and to not have to owe respect to a slave. Cato wrote many books for his son so that he may never leave the house and encounter false teachings from others. He also taught his son everything that he needed to know about grammar and law. He not only showed his son about the exercise of the mind, he also showed him the exercise of the body also. Cato showed his son how to box, how to stay in shape and get ready for war. Cato wanted none of these things were to be learned from a slave, and none of them were.
