In reference to University of the Peoples Catalog (2015, pg 84), plagiarism is defined as:

· Fabrication- falsifying documents, changing or inventing data, not cited.

· Unauthorized assistance- not the students work or collaborated with others.

· Misrepresentation- lying or misrepresenting a student’s personal situation to a university member in attempt to receive special circumstances.

· Collusion- Assisting another student in committing and act of dishonesty.

All of the above are all prevalent in western culture norm because it gives credit where credit is due, shows own work legitimacy, and reduces dishonest behavior by consequences. The culture supports both individuality and collective thought processes. Majority of people in western culture want to leave a legend or mark on the world. If they invent something genuine, they want to be given credit for or mentioned in the work of others. If someone builds or innovates on an idea of another, origination of the idea could be traced to legitimize documents. Consequences of plagiarism in western culture at least in the education system is not tolerated. First violation: Warning issued, and student is issued a zero on the assignment.

2. Second violation: Student is issued a zero on the assignment or exam in question, as well as a failing grade in the course.

3. Third violation: Student is issued a failing grade in the course and is suspended from UoPeople for one or more terms.

4. Fourth violation: Student is dismissed from the university.

Behaviors that would be considered normal in the scope of plagiarism would be citing sources, original work, and honesty while writing any document. Deviant behavior would be claiming other people’s work as your own, copy and pasting, forging someone’s handwriting, assisting in committing the act of dishonesty, and getting help from someone
