The case study for unit 4 is in regards to one of the biggest corporate scandals in the United States. Enron was ranked in the top in fortune 500 companies, with reported revenues of $111 billion (Ferrell, Hirt, & Ferrell, 2009). The key word in that was reported, because shortly after their corporation collapsed in debt. The question became how can a company that just reported $111 billion in revenue be in debt? Enron lead executives of the company were falsely reporting income that had yet-to-obtained (Ferrell, Hirt, & Ferrell, 2009). Basically everything that Enron claimed was profitable was nothing more than a debt. This behavior was unethical, and it was unethical on the leaders in the company who chose that falsifying documents was the way to go. Because of the selfishness of the top executives at Enron their actions caused thousands of people to be laid off, and employees even lost their retirement savings (Ferrell, Hirt, & Ferrell, 2009). I would also fully abide by the rules of the Sarbanes-Oxley Act so they know we are accurately reporting information. I will make sure whatever outside source I use for my audit, they will have to be certified and an in depth background check, so I know where they stand ethically. Enron and WorldCom came out week from one another disclosing that they were actually in depth. My company will never let anything we do be greed driven. What we do will be the legal, and ethical way. The big blame for Enron, WorldCom, and other companies was their people were never ethical. If a person has an ethical background, and knows what being ethical means, then they will be less likely to bend the rules.
