Educators have an influence on their students that will follow them from childhood to adulthood. In “Models for writers,” Rowen, Carl T. “Unforgettable Miss Bessie,” Raymond, David. “0n Being 17, Bright and unable to read,” and Murphy, Erin. “White Lies,” all influenced a life, however, one of them changed a child’s life for the better and the others could have turned a child future upside down. They still all had the same goals in teaching children, but not the same desire. When adults teach children, it doesn’t always turn out positive. They can either guide a child to success or leave them with low self-esteem and unable to understand a complicated world. He had a substitute teacher who wasn’t kind at all. The only thing this Substitute teacher had in common with Ms. Bessie was they both pushed their students, However, the substitute pushed without patience unlike, Mrs. Bessie who pushed with patience and out of love. Raymond’s teacher had a negative influence on Raymond. This student wished he were dead and hated everything about learning. He left school feeling rejected and inadequate. He felt he would never understand, but he also felt as though no one understood and he was right. No one understood what he was going though no one took the time to understand. It takes a lot of patience. What children learn in the class room helps them become leaders as adults, but while they are still children, it is an adults job to make sure they are taught properly. Educators take on roles that parents cannot. Most highly respected Adults had great role models as children. Students are more likely to complete their goals in life when they have positive influences. When a child has no one to look up to there is a good chance that the child will follow the wrong crowd. Changing the mindset of a teacher to be a more optimistic and open one will take time and training but in the end, with fewer misunderstood kids it will be worth it. In the article “From Social Class and the Hidden Curriculum of Work” written by Jean Anyon, she going on to explain how differently different classes of schools are taught and the skill set each school is giving their kids. In the “working class,” kids are taught to do without question or even a sense of purpose. As you move up the classes the children get more and more explanation as to why they are doing what they are doing. In the case that a child asks questions in the lower class they are told “because I said so” or simply told again to complete the task at hand in the exact way it was described. One’s economic class should not determine the quality of their education to the point that when all classes have completed, some are ready to join society in a place allowing advancement and some will never make it out of entry level
The teacher walked to the front of the room with her book in hand and as she got closer to the front, Paul got lower in his seat. He knew what was coming next; it was time for the class to read the next chapter. The teacher would start reading and then call on different students to read as they moved through the chapter. This scared Paul right down to his toes. He had read in front of the class before, but it was what followed after class that worried him the most. The taunts from the other students like “retard” or “are you stupid or what?” This type of relentless teasing would continue until gym class where he could hold his own ground again. He did not have any problems in gym; class he was good at sports and liked to play. The reason that Paul has so much trouble reading is because he has Dyslexia.
Over this past summer I’ve worked at a recreational park mentoring young children. I was still determining what major I wanted study upon college move in day; I was clueless. A week before dispatch, a girl wrote me a letter. It read “Dear Mr. Christian, Thank you! You are making a great impact in our community. Sincerely, Madison” after reading the letter it inspired me; I realized teaching was my strong suit and the Education field was best for me. In a society where kids must go to school up to the collegiate level, teaching is an impactful career choice. Teachers help contour the minds of future leaders of the world. Furthermore, teachers play a crucial role in guiding students to the knowledge, skills, and abilities they need to succeed in life, and teachers lead students to make informed decisions on any topic the meet in the future. As a teacher, a person must relinquish their knowledge onto students. Finally, they must prepare their students for all the obstacles they will face later in life.
The desire to influence young children ranked the number one reason why students enter the field of education (Kauchak & Eggen, 2014, p.5). As an educator, there are numerous rewards that come with the profession, along with challenges that can influence instruction. A positive environment, personal development and being a role model are rewarding aspects of the teaching profession that make diversity and the complexities of teaching not only manageable, but a more gratifying experience.
Successful teachers develop the whole child by making integrated efforts to promote their student’s academic, social and emotional learning. Children need to be aware of themselves and others; make responsible decisions, and be ethical and respectful of the people around them.
I’ve had teachers who taught in a way that was a good way for them to teacher, but wasn’t a good way for students to learn. I know I want to be a high school teacher, and by the time they will reach my class, my students should know how they should be presented the information, so that they can learn in such a way that is best for them. A teacher should be able to teach in a way that’s suitable for the majority of students, and be able to give extra help to those who don’t learn as the other students do. I want to be the teacher who is willing to put in extra time with the students for their classroom
I chose education as my career path because I hope to be able to make a small difference in a child’s life. Time and time again I have seen children being educated poorly and/or not having appropriate role models in their life. I feel that an educator must not only be able to convey to the student the classroom material, but also be a counselor, coach, mentor, and a parent. Failing to fulfill these roles gives a child the chance to slip through the educational system without having the opportunity to influence them to some degree.
I believe educators are one of the most important careers out there, without them where would we be today? Would you be reading this paper? Would you still be able to read, write, or have an educated conversation? Would you know how to pay for things at the grocery store, and know if you’re receiving the correct change back? There is something special in making an impact on someone’s life and that is why I am on the road to becoming a teacher. I want to have a positive impact on young children’s lives and by doing so I will be providing experiences to help them learn, grow, and develop appropriately. There are various rewards in teaching; being able to associate and bounce ideas with other teachers, interacting with young children, watching the children learn and develop in new experiences, and becoming a lifelong influence on the children. The biggest reason why I want to become a teacher is; I want to be a positive influence to the lives of young innocent children, and a sense of generativity, in which I will help develop the next generation of leaders. There is no denying that the future of a nation relies on its youth. The human population goes through a never ending cycle of life and death, therefore it is clear that children and teenagers must learn to live independently. I have decided to become a teacher because I love children. I enjoy watching them grow, and I want to make a difference in the lives of my students. As a teacher, I will do everything that I can to ensure that each becomes a productive, successful citizen in life. In order for me to obtain this goal, I will create a loving, positive, respectful, and safe learning environment where each student will be treated equally and be encouraged to do his or her best. I would like to bring this same moral into my classroom, when a child is motivated, passionate,and self-aware of their needs, strengths, and weaknesses, they can and will push themselves to improve. Students do not solely care about how much knowledge an educator has, but they care about how much these educators truly care. We shouldn't judge a person on how educated they are based only on test scores. The most educated person may not be the most suitable person to teach children. I may lack the test scores, however, I do not lack the passion and motivation needed to be a great teacher. If we cannot celebrate small successes, the final outcome is less weighted.
