Conflict theorist understand the distribution of power as being an unequal process of one group always having more power than another group, which creates conflict and tension between the two groups. Those with more power try to keep the social balance as is, so that they would not lose any power, but the group with less power tries to change the social order to get some power. According to some theorist like Marx, each group has their own interest that they want to achieve and those with more power will achieve those interest. For example, the bourgeoisie will have more power than the proletariat because of their relations to the means of production. Another way to look at the distribution of power is to compare the amount of women to men in the federal government. Since there are more men than women in the federal government, they have more power to decide what laws gets pass, especially, laws cornering women’s right. The reason why men have power is because they have the support of rich lobbyists who pours millions of dollars into their campaign fund to get them elected which results in the unequal distribution of power. Foucault stated, that disciplinary power is invisible but the object of that power is made visible, this means that even if a person cannot see the power, the person will still act or behave in a way that shows as if the disciplinary power is visible. So the person’s actions and behavior is made visible which is the object of the power and this change of behavior is due to the disciplinary power. An example of disciplinary power, is when an inmate is released from prison, once he is released, he will change his behavior and actions to fit in with the law. The former inmate believes that the police is watching his every single move, and as soon as he breaks a law no matter how minor it is, the police will send him back to jail. However, the police is not watching his every move and waiting for him to mess up, but because he believes that he is being watched, he changes his behavior to not be notice.
