“Life on U street isn’t like how it used to be,” said Mohammed Kazeem, a 35-year-old retail specialist, who has frequented bars and clubs on U street since he turned 21-years-old.

The U Street Corridor in Ward 1 of Washington, D.C. is known for it’s hip culture, modern nightlife, and historic music scene, but this stylish and vibrant area has had a dramatic change in demographics over the last few decades.

Building projects and an increase demand for housing in D.C. has hit various communities in the area. The demographics of U Street Corridor in particular has been affected as real estate developers purchase more land in the city causing and increase in living costs.

K Vintage clothing store on U Street for three years before the business closed in October of this year. Kazeem recalls having conversations with the owner Somkiat Umkerd about the change in clothing styles over the last 20 years. He said that Umkerd, who spent his entire professional career studying cultural and its relation to fashion, would often describe how when Black people left the neighborhood, so did the jazz and blues influenced clothing.

“Kiat would often say stuff like ‘The white yuppies are taking over with their wood framed glasses’ and it’s like u street is losing its heritage,” said Kazeem.

This ‘city within a city’ was predominantly black between the 1900 and 1948 due to increasing segregation in D.C. during that time. It was the most populated area of restaurants, bars and clubs owned by African- Americans in the city. It wasn’t until the Supreme Court ruled that restrictive real estate based on race was unconstitutional that black families began moving out of the U street area, according to the National Park Services register of Historic Places.

“When you think about the Langston Hughes’s and the Duke Ellingtons that built up this neighborhood, it’s really hard to accept that in the next 10 years, Black people can be the minority,” said
