In the 1950s, Switzerland and Germany developed the International Typographic Style. Typically composition has a grid layout and san-serif fonts to create an asymmetrical organization of the elements used. This makes the information clear and easy to read. Later, in the 1960s, the United States went through a poster craze. The first wave of posters were often related to anti-establishment values, rock and roll and psychedelic drugs; often referred to as psychedelic posters. This movement had many characteristics from art nouveau, pop art and op-art movement. A few remained such as Pablo Picasso and Pierre Bonnard. Modernism grew as artists felt that the traditional forms of art and architecture were becoming dated in the time where there was a new economic, social, and political formations rising due to the upcoming industrialized world. The composition begins with a grid to create an asymmetrical organization of the elements used. Not only is it eye appealing but it makes the information clear and easy to read. San-serif fonts were also used within the grid design because it is the most legible and good for structuring the information. Josef Müller-Brockmann work “das freundliche Handzeichen” shows characteristics of the International Typographic Style. When looking at it you can quickly see the photo of the hand has hierarchy over the text. The placement of the hand gives movement because it is going off the page. He also uses a limited color pallet which is less distracting. Müller-Brockmann does well with using the grid for the placement of his text. As can been seen in the work, the text running down the left fits in-between his thumb and pointer finger with is visually appealing. Also the way the black and white fingers overlay with the color image makes it merge together rather than just one image on top of another. In like manner, artist Armin Hofmann’s poster shows similar characteristics to Josef Müller-Brockmann. This composition has the same text on the left side along the image, using the grid. Hofmann doesn 't use color so it 's strictly positive and negative space. The dancer in the back is softer than the typography so it gives a good

Although Picasso continued painting, he did not exhibit during that time. Picasso's works were usually held in exhibitions and were highly renowned although there were still many who did not agree with his style. Overall, Picasso's works reflected that of his time as the creation of the camera lead to a new movement of art which is still respected to this day.
Posters were mainly used to sway public opinion. They were aimed at brainwashing society to think and act a certain way. Each poster was designed specificly for a particular community, playing upon the cultural norm. Since posters were rather inexpensive, they were not made to last, but were effectively used as a visual tool of propaganda. They were usually very graphic, therefore allowing even the illiterate to be swayed in the direction of the artists choosing.
Posters were used during World War II by the U.S. government to get a significant message across to their citizens. To analyze a poster it is important to think about the choice of color, placement of words and images, shapes, and emotional appeal ( Lunsford and Ruszkiewicz 91). All of these factor into the message the author is trying to explain to its viewers visually. In the poster “When You Ride Alone,” the message the author was trying to get across to Americans was the importance of carpooling. This poster successfully conveys the message through the words,color scheme and representation of objects.
Pop art is an experimental art which surfaced in Great Britain in the early 1950’s. One of the major art movements of the twentieth century, it came into its own in the United States in the late 1950’s. This art form incorporated photographs in ways that had not been utilized before. It utilized mass-culture imagery and iconography, in contrast to the traditional tendencies of fine art. Pop art is considered to be one of the last modern art movements and served as a precursor to postmodern art. The art form is characterized by themes and techniques derived from mass culture, including advertising and comic books. Perhaps one of the most famous Pop artists, is Andy Warhol.
Numerous intellectuals have debated on the effects that typography has on the mind. An example of two such intellectuals are Walter Ong and Neil Postman. In Walter Ong’s “Writing is a Technology that Restructures Thought” he describes the difference between oral and typographic cultures and the resulting effects each had on the mind while in Chapter 4 of Postman’s “Amusing Ourselves to Death” similarly focuses on how typography has molded the way that we think, which has become very structured and writing-like, and how that effects public discourse. Cultural and political changes such as the spread of Marxism, the rise of psychoanalytical ideas, and the growth of media in the face of technological advancement prompted many artists to reassess notions of art (Farthing). Even though it’s seen every single day in multiple ways, people still forget that it’s considered an art of its own. Every single day we see typeface in multiple ways. Typography is one of the most influential art forms out in the world to date yet somehow it goes unnoticed. Max Miedinger, Adrian Frutiger, John Baskerville, and Matthew Carter are some of the most influential and famous photographers in history. Max Miedinger, the creator of “Helvetica”, (one of the most admired fonts) changed the world of typography / typeface.
Analysis of Film Posters Having studied film posters this term, it is apparent that certain forms and conventions are applied. [IMAGE]The major forms and conventions of film posters could include: A large title which attracts the eye, bold colours which stand out from the background, intriguing picture which would attract viewers to the film, persuasive language which might persuade the viewers to go and see the film, using the main character's name for promotion, and the certification will either to ensure that the right type of people are watching the film. An example of how different types of film (e.g. comedy, horror) poster use these forms and conventions to attract a certain type of person (e.g. teenagers, horror fans) would be a really scary horror film, which will use eerie images in order to appeal to horror fans. A successful film poster will accomplish attracting the target audience and persuade them to come and watch the film.
Art Deco was a style that flourished throughout 1910 to around 1935. Known for its advancements in the art of advertising, the style had begun to prosper around the start of World War I (1914 – 1919), and had further developed to become a combination of various styles, as well as a rebellion against the concepts of Art Nouveau. Originally known to be referred to as the Art Moderne style, the name was changed only after the period had already passed its peak. The origin of the name involved the idea of decorative arts, hence the shortened name Art Deco, but previously the style had taken root within the time period of Modernism. People decided to rebel against the political and social rules of their time and started a new trend of art. It conveyed dramatic subjects perceived with strong feelings and imagination.
Modernism began as a movement in that late 19th, early 20th centuries. Artists started to feel restricted by the styles and conventions of the Renaissance period. Thusly came the dawn of Modernism in many different forms, ranging from Impressionism to Cubism.
Towards the end of the nineteenth century, the Art Nouveau style became an international movement. For the first time in decorative arts history there was a simultaneous movement throughout Europe and America. Art Nouveau brought the finest designers and craftsmen together in order to design buildings, furniture, wallpaper, fabrics, ceramics, metalwork and glasswork. Art Nouveau was considered more than a style, it was a philosophy. From this philosophy carefully designed articles for the home were designed intended to fit into the scheme of the whole Art Nouveau style. Line was the most important aspect of the Art Nouveau period. Art Nouveau was a rebellion against machine made articles of the 19th century that were copies of past designs. Art Nouveau was also a reaction against the old Victorian tradition. Art Nouveau designers borrowed from the past but because of the emphasis on line and adaptation of natural forms to design. Art Nouveau is easily distinguishable from any other period in decorative arts.
The Bauhaus was known as the most influential modernist art and design school of the 20th century and had a vast impact on art, architecture and graphic design. They affected everything from the steel-framing through to fonts. With their motto form follows function, and a new wave of mass production, they sought and successfully brought aspects of this philosophy into the 21st century, for design to be led by the function rather than let the embellishments determine the shape (Wick, R. K.). This paper will approach the characteristics and the style of the Bauhaus movement alongside the design outcomes of that era. It analyses a range of contextual issues relevant to the Bauhaus ideology and outcomes.
