“Two Kinds” A relationship between a mother and daughter can be a rough road sometimes, when a mother is constantly imposing and making decisions for her daughter. In the short story, “Two Kinds” by Amy Tan is a story about how a mother pushes her daughter to live up to the highest expectations that any mother could possibly think of. It all starts to begin when her mother loses everything in china and moves to America. Jing-Mei’s mother wants her to become a successful, famous Chinese woman, but Jeing-Mei has something else on her mind about how she wants to live her life. With all things to consider, her new life in America was to show her daughter that she could be anything she wanted to become with hard work, and dedication. Because of her pushing her daughter to be intelligent, respectful, and to be a genius, causing her daughter to resident her, as years passed she finally forgave her mother. In the opening statement of the short story, Jeing-Mei says, “My mother believed you could be anything you wanted to be in America.” (222) After the horrendous event that happened in China, causing her mother to lose everything and move to America, she wanted a new beginning with her daughter. so Jeing-Mei could become successful and …show more content…

The mother in the story is affected by the new transformation to America, because the only place she knew was china. According to the author their relationship was a rocky road due to the fact of moving to America. For this reason, her mother had a more difficult time adjusting because she only knew Chinese culture. The reason the mother had a hard time adjusting, because quoted in the story; “She had come here in 1949 after losing everything in China: her mother and father, her family, her first husband, and two daughters, twin baby girls.” (222) No doubt that losing everything back home and moving to a strange place to raise a daughter all by herself was no piece of
