Within the Northern Rivers region, situated in the far north eastern corner of New South Wales, stands a remnant, a legacy of a mighty shield volcano that existed millions of years ago. Named the Tweed Volcano, this impressive volcano once dominated the region, with evidence of its reign – from towering peaks to fertile plains scattered throughout the Tweed Region. My name is Ryan, an enthusiastic hiker from Brisbane, a large metropolis a stone’s throw north of the Tweed Volcano, and today I will be hiking around the rim of the heavily eroded caldera of the Tweed Volcano. I reached the gap between the Nightcap Range and Lamington Range in the east. I wanted to tackle the Lamington Range first, because it was the taller and harder of the two mountain ranges that make up the Tweed Caldera. I walked north west towards the start of the Lamington Range. Battling the dense vegetation, I clambered up the steep terrain. I could hear Kookaburra laughing as I awkwardly struggled up the stairs. As I reached the summit of the first hill, I peered over a gap in the trees excitedly to take in the amazing view. From here, the “scooped out” centre of the Tweed Caldera becomes apparent. Mount Warning rises proudly at the centre of the crater. Just as I was admiring this breathtaking view, I did not notice an inconspicuous tree root jutting out of the ground. As I took another step near the forest clearing that exposed the brilliant view, I accidentally tripped over the root that was obscuring my path. I nearly tumbled a few metres down the steep rhyolite cliffs, but luckily, due to my quick reflexes, I was able to grab an overhanging vine to prevent myself from a nasty fall.
