In the following excerpt from “The Tunnels of Blood”, the author uses detailed description and atmosphere fantastically to write an effective gothic text. The writer uses atmosphere very effectively throughout the excerpt and that is shown when it says, “The smell of blood is sickening,” as well as mentioning, “Hundreds of carcasses hang from silver hooks, stiff, shiny with frosty blood.” (Which also shows intense description). These quotes from the text help build the atmosphere and since the excerpt is most likely from the middle of the book, it helps the reader get some background information on what may have happened before. It helps the reader feel like they know where they are and are completely aware of their surroundings and the events taking place. Furthermore, the author uses atmosphere when the text reads, “The floor’s slippery with blood”, showing that the speaker is in some sort of predicament that involves death, blood and gore, all of which are typical gothic and horror elements of a novel. The author also uses lots of description to show the emotions that the speaker is feeling. An example of this is, “Hundreds of carcasses hang from silver hooks, stiff, shiny with frosty blood.” This quote shows that the narrator is in a place that sickens him and a place that disturbs him. As well as that the writer says, “He pats the dead animal- the squeaky noise if the hook as the carcass swings puts my teeth on edge”. This further proves the speakers discomfort and repulsive feelings toward the setting around him. This is a gothic element because it puts the reader into the shoes of the speaker and the reader has empathy for what the speaker is
