Reality can be contrived— authentic vs constructed. In The Truman Show by Peter Weir I would say that the ultimate illuminating incident is when Truman snapped and went off in the car with his wife Meryl. In 500 Days of Summer by Marc Webb the illuminating moment is when he saw the ring on Summer’s hand. This is the biggest illuminating incident because that is when Tom finally gains an understanding of his constructed reality and authentic reality. He expected to “get back” with Summer but in reality she was engaged. He was anticipated, had good spirits and was full of excitement but when he saw the ring on Summer’s finger, all that disappeared and he was disappointed. Marc Webb’s purpose was that he wanted to show how powerful emotions are and how excitement and disappointment have the same impact. Also no matter how hard you try to dodge your feeling they are still there. “I believe when he is happy he believes everything around him is beautiful so when it shows the days, when he’s happy the background is happy and when he’s sad the background is sad” (rafatia). This shows how when he was excited and happy everything around him was happy and vise versa when he is sad or disappointed. This proves how excitement and disappointment have the same impact. “We start near the end, and then hop around between the times that were good and the times that left pain” review. This explains how the pain and the good parts are both there even when you hop around through different parts. That is why this moment is the illuminating incident, because that is when Tom couldn’t handle the truth about the actual reality and that had caused him to run
