Introduction: Every year, students at the Stephen Leacock APEX program in grade 9 are given the opportunity to play a leadership role in their community. This involves an endowment project where each one of the students who are involved in the program is asked to collect information and interact with a non-profit or charitable organization. Then the students will present the organization to the class and decide which organization will be most beneficial from the $5000 the APEX program will provide. One of the organizations that caught my attention is Tropicana due to its wide variety of services for the community. The following information has been gained from interviewing key members of Tropicana Sharon and Rick. Thanks to their positive …show more content…
It was founded by Robert K. Brown. Robert was in university when he was assigned a project about community needs. In his work Robert noticed the challenges youth face and saw the need for counselling, recreation, and educational programs for disadvantaged youth who live in Toronto. They mostly focused on the people from a Caribbean and black heritage. Tropicana’s first service aimed at teaching teenaged drop-outs in a high need area of Scarborough, Ontario. In 1984, Tropicana had established a partnership with the United Way of Greater Toronto, and was the first organization from the Black and Caribbean community to become a United Way member-agency. Today Tropicana is a growing service-delivery organization made up of staff and dedicated volunteers with programs designed to help all youth, newcomers, and members of the Caribbean and Black …show more content…
However, in addition to federal and provincial funding, Tropicana also relies on the generosity of individuals, institutions, foundation, and corporations to fund its programs. In the meantime, Tropicana is in a financial crisis as they don’t have enough money for all its programs. For example, they can’t finish up the gymnasium (still needs tiles and equipment), computer lab (needs new computers), classrooms (needs projectors, tablets, laptops), Kitchen (needs microwave and wall mounted faucet), Art room (needs art supplies), and tables are needed in nearly every room. All together, the money added up for buying all of the equipment is a minimum of a quarter of a million. The $5000 can be used for buying some of the equipment which will be extremely useful to Tropicana considering they are in desperate need of
Although there are many negative emotions and feelings running through this community, there are also many positive things among the community.
Developing a long-term strategy and performance metrics are Trautwein’s top priorities. With these objectives in mind, this group focused on four components for further analysis. The internal and external factors that the organization is facing were analyzed, which allowed a definition of WTL’s strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats. John Trautwein’s leadership style was observed, which provided characterizations of his traits and helped to identify his abilities as President of WTL. The foundation’s mission and program initiatives were evaluated in an order to determine their effectiveness. Lastly, WTL was considered from a donor’s perspective, in an order to identify motivating, and deterring factors. Further explanation of this analysis is continued below.

We were amazed with the facility and all it had to offer. It was apparent money was invested abundantly as they were still adding to its structure. My children had to return to an old decrepit school whose football field was just a field with wooden benches, and tattered books for learning materials. The school was a reflection of its population status, whose only hope was selling candy bars with no investors in sight. Reference Kozol, J. (1999)
Along such time, the budget has grown over $2000,000, fact that paradoxically left Youth Haven with a deficit of$20,000. Marcel is in the process to upgrade her mindset of for-profit sector molded to the nonprofit sector environment. In addition, an executive director must consider some other factor, even when a nonprofit departs from the way any for-profit business is. In the textbook, Nonprofit Management Principles and Practices, Worth pointed out, “nonprofit managers are confronted with sorting through an array of options and selecting the measures and methods that meet both their own need for useful management information as well as the expectations of funders, watchdogs, and regulators.” (Wroth, P. 161). It is important to understand that administrators of non profits not only have to handle the management side of things but also to make sure that whatever service they are providing to the community is still running
In order to develop a better job with school finances the administrator had to dedicate time, and consider many factors not just the monetary aspect, but also, an administrator has to have are where to allocate the funds, the amount available, and resources provided. Also, the importance that the financial system sees public education as an important source for the future of the children and their investments are guide tours the education (Rose, 2013). Finances at schools allows them to obtain programs to enhance the education and encourage to keep a good attendance. All schools and districts need to be somewhat strong financially in order to provide students with a higher quality education as well the technology advantages.
...our NFP can leverage the recently acquired $150,000 and turn it into $1,000,000, in capital funds, $144,100 in In-kind donations from partnerships, and nearly $710,000 in Per Diem that supports our annual operations for Veterans programs, which will enable them to win the “war at home” and achieve their full potential in all areas of their life. As a result, accomplishing this mission proves to provide a maximum ROI from both a financial and personal standpoint.
This study will attempt to differentiate between the two based on definitions, characteristics, tax laws, funding sources, organizational structure, incentives, leadership styles and human resources. This study will include semi structured interviews by the CEO of Guadenzia, a for profit organization in Baltimore City that provides counseling services for at risk youth in Northwest Baltimore and The Director of Northwest Baltimore Youth Services, Inc., a non-profit organization that also provides counseling services to at risk youth in Northwest Baltimore. This information will then be examined in regards to their similarities and differences.
Letters, emails and phone calls soliciting for donations along with providing an awareness of the need to assist the homeless individuals. To co-workers, associates, local providers which provide services to the homeless population, advertising it in my email’s signature page, Face Book, conversations with some community members such as the Columbus House, United Way, Whalley Avenue Special Service District, and local distributors in the City of New Haven and speak to local business; including a request to WTNH Channel 8 Community News to provide a television segment to encourage the community and other organizations that can make a contribution with products or monetary donations to the need of the project. „« Without government support fund in second year onwards, if GSC wants to breakeven, we will suggest using case 1 with a combination of gift shop. With a $520,000 as promotion expenditures, GSC still has a $20,000 lost that need to be covered. Generate profit from gift shop can get out of the lost. In case 2, it is non-sense to charge the preschool children a ticket price since it will conflict will our primary goal, which is to educate the general public. In case 3, it is difficult to persuade government to grant a $1,000,000 each year. Once the government stops funding, GSC may need to close down.

I attended Mary’s Kitchen on June 18, 2016 at 517 W Struck Ave, Orange, California 82867. I heard about this organization from one of my instructor who is a member of Sigma Theta Tau International. Mary’s Kitchen is a non-profit organization that helps less fortunate people in the Orange County. It is run by all volunteers as they provide compassionate care to others. The Sigma Theta Tau International has set up a Homeless Outreach Tent Clinic at Mary’s Kitchen. I visited the Homeless Outreach Tent Clinic. I had the opportunity to volunteer and meet a lot of nurses. We started at 9 in the morning and finished at 12 in the afternoon. I really enjoyed volunteering there as it made me more aware about poverty and the needs of homeless population.
The relationship between young people and nonprofits can be the start of a significant change in our community, and should be a reciprocal and powerful educational experience. An open-minded and encouraging flow of communication between organizations and community members can be the launchpad for the social and environmental change organizations talk about and try for every day. Together, we can make change – not just a semblance of idealism, but reality, as well.
Throughout this course my paradigms of what a nonprofit organization have been challenged as we have considered the major aspects and leadership challenges of these organizations. Having worked with for profit and nonprofit organizations in the past I was quite confident that I had a clear understanding of the distinctions between the two. I had worked in organizations that regularly used volunteers to accomplish their mission and felt that the management of these processes were simplistic. Despite these misconceptions, I found that I was able to learn a tremendous amount through our reading, peer interactions, group projects and equally important, my volunteer service as part of this course.
