Transformational Leadership is a style of leadership that has the ability to make change within an organization. This leadership style is new compared to some of the other leadership styles. This style not only changes the organization, it also can change the followers within the organization. Within Transformational leadership the leader identifies change that needs to be made and together the organization thinks of a plan that can execute the change. Support, motivation, and inspiration are key factors of this leadership style that the leader creates within the organization and amongst the followers. Adaptability is a key characteristic when applying Transformational Leadership. The leader has to be adaptable in order to engage in change. They have to be fluid and be comfortable with the change taken place. The ability of being inspiring is also a characteristic when applying Transformational Leadership. In order for followers to feel that you are aligned with their ideas and visions you have to inspire them that change is even needed. According to the HOW report (2016), “Inspiration is 27% more predictive of performance amongst employees than engagement.” Being a visionary is also important. You cannot change the future unless you can envision the change. During this phase, the leader is able to create the vision of the company and communicate it well enough to engage followers to believe in the new vision and direction of the organization. The last characteristic is being charismatic. Being charismatic is the ability to use your charm to engage others to follow you. If there is an organization that is stagnant, then a Transformational Leader will have the best approach in order to develop the new vision needed. The leader would lead by providing the followers with motivation, a sense of comradery and purpose, along with having them buy into the new vision. The leader would be able to identify with the follower’s ideas to build the positive relationship needed from the follower.
Transformational Leadership is most effective when organizations followers are open to change and feel that a change needs to be made within the organization. For example, the agency I currently work for is undergoing change. We are moving from a case management approach to a more holistic therapeutic approach. As a leader within the organization I feel that a client will need more than surface-based services. As a result, we are in the midst of making changes in order to reflect that. It is my job as a leader to allow the followers to buy in and believe in this new model.
Transformational Leadership is ineffective when an organization is very resistant to change or when change is not needed. For example, a school that feels that no changes need to be made to their policy regarding curriculum. It would be very hard for a Transformational Leader to come into the school and introduce LGBT inclusive

Transformational leadership describes a leader moving followers beyond immediate self-interests through idealized influence (charisma), inspiration motivation, intellectual stimulation, or individualized consideration. Transformational leaders are change agents. They influence the mission and objectives to make way for a brighter future for the organization. Followers are motivated to do more than is originally expected because of their feelings of trust and respect for the leader.
In this time of transition and uncertainty, research suggests that transformational leadership is highly effective (Straight, 2006). Leadership research has drifted from emphasis on the competence of leaders to “manage change” to the ability to “transform” organizations. Transformational leaders have attributes and behaviors needed to successfully motivate and empower employees. According to Bernard Bass (1990), transformational leadership occurs when a leader transforms, or changes, his or her followers in three important ways that together result in followers trusting the leader, performing behaviors that contribute to the achievement of organizational goals, and being motivated to perform at a high level. Transformational leadership, as detailed in Course 15, is a concept centered molding Airman around you, from subordinates, to peers and benefiting all of those in the chain of command even those above you. One specific tenet of Transformational leadership that I find inspiring and critically important to a developing leader is Inspirational Motivation, or Charming.
Transformational leadership is the optimal style for a leader in an organization to have due mainly to its prominent characteristics such as being influential, innovative, motivating, proactive, and having the ability to both responsibly and reasonably delegate tasks. These aspects specific to the style of transformational leadership are essential to positive organizational function, environment, and advancement because they are characteristics that all hold power and constructive properties individually. The goal of transformational leadership is to cause a positive change in individuals, help motivate them, and develop a leader within each individual.
Every organization requires effective followership and leadership to reach peak performance. Effective followers use creativity, intrinsic motivations, and commitment to the organization to ensure its success. In addition, great followers need great leaders to guide them and build them into future leaders. Great leaders understand the importance of various followership styles and traits and use them to benefit the organization while helping followers achieve greatness as well. Futhermore, great followers and leaders strive to continually build on their strengths and weaknesses. With that in mind, strengths and areas of improvement will be discussed in the following paragraphs.
One of the most important components of leadership is the leader. A leader is responsible for his or her followers and the overall goal of the group or organization. Leaders are the people held accountable or everything that happens, good or bad. On the other hand, the second major component of leadership is the followers. Without followers, a leader would be worthless. Followers make up the backbone of a leader because they are the masses that get goals accomplished. A leader is just one person, but the number of followers is countless. In order to be an effective follower, there are a countless number of characteristics that allow a follower to be the best they can be. Five of these characteristics include a positive attitude, communication skills, being part of the process, being open to new ideas, and patience.

Leaders who inspire are able to create resonance and lead people with a compelling vision and mission. They are persuasive and engaging and have a genuine interest in who they are working with. These leaders want to understand a person’s goal and their strengths and weaknesses. This is important because it also allows the leader to be a strong advocate for change and to know how to overcome barriers to change.
Transformational leadership strives to unite people in order to create a better future for the individuals involved as well as the organization. The only way this can be done is by reaching out to others and first establishing positive relationships. Weaknesses My first weakness as it relates to transformational leadership is showing favoritism for one follower over others.
Another aspect of leadership includes leadership traits such as being influential and inspirational. There also different contexts of leadership, e.g, leading oneself, leading other individuals, leading groups, leading organizations. Some traits that are often associated with being an effective leader include a measure of intelligence, high energy, self confidence, dominance, and a need for achievement. An effective, charismatic leader must lead by example. That leader must be able to know what is going on, the job or task that is being accomplished, and be able to lead the group into performing the task at hand successfully.
Transformational leadership focuses on what the leader can accomplish instead of his personal characteristics and how his relationship with others. This leader “helps to bring about major, positive changes by moving group members beyond their self-interests and toward the good of the group, organization, or society (Dubrin, 2007, p. 84). The essence of this leader is to develop and transform people.
