The purpose of this report is to describe the evolution of the traffic lights system since it was established until today. I am also fulfilling the course requirements.
Background:
Traffic lights act as a method of controlling the interaction between different elements using the same mode of movement. The traffic lights make life easy by controlling the movement among cars and humans. They tell humans and cars when to stop and when to keep moving. There was a big evolution in the traffic lights system. As I am going to discuss in this report, traffic lights were originally powered by gas and not by electricity. They were flashing to colors which were red and green. The traffic lights system kept changing during the years until we have the new system that people see these days.
Scope:
In this report, I am going to state when the traffic lights were established, why they were used, and how the system has improved since its implementation. It is hereby noted that maintenance and alternative versions of traffic lights are not discussed in this report.
Discussion:
The use of traffic ...
Morgan did not let prejudice against him stop his efforts to invent devices to make the world a safer place. In 1920, the use of the automobiles increased, causing traffic congestion in many of the large U.S. cities. In 1923, Morgan designed and patented a traffic signal (patent #1,475,024). The signal consisted of a tall post with movable arms that monitored and controlled traffic. The post rotated and the arms moved up. The signal contained lights that flashed the words ”stop” and “go.
A simple Google search will turn up hundreds of studies based on the effectiveness of emergency lighting on the road. Obviously, this wealth of information is too vast to summarize in one article; however, there is one study that sticks out when discussing whether red or blue emergency vehicle lights are easier to see on the road. In this article, we will go over a study released by Lt. James D. Wells Jr. on behalf of the Florida Highway Patrol. This study was released in 2004 and concentrates mainly on emergency lighting configurations and the effectiveness of these lights in helping to reduce collisions on the road and keeping officers and emergency first responders safer on the road. Who Should Understand the 2004 Florida Highway Patrol Emergency Lighting Configuration?
When formed by legislation in 1935, the Colorado State Patrol was created to “…promote safety, protect human life and preserve the highways of this state by the courteous and strict enforcement of the laws and regulations of this state relating to highways and the traffic on such highways” (CRS 24-33.5-201). Originally named the “Courtesy Patrol,” over the last 76 years the Colorado State Patrol has evolved into a comprehensive and complex law enforcement agency, without forgetting its original mission. Through the dedication to its members, both past and present, distinguished professional standards, and industry-leading technical competence, the Colorado State Patrol has stayed true to its traditions while taking on changing law enforcement challenges.
In the development of expanding, Southern Light a private cable company plans on extending its fiber-optic services from the Gulf Coast to Huntsville, Alabama. Southern Light is the Gulf Coast’s leading provider of fiber optic networks and high-volume transport solutions. Southern Light markets affordable, high-bandwidth services over their own fiber optic network. In this research, I will discuss the history and main operates of this private business, then I will identify and analyze the four factors of production of Southern Light fiber. Next, I will identify and analyze the business environments that are affecting this business. The expanding of Southern Light affects the community and businesses
The controversy that is around traffic cameras is a positive point into the safety of streets and the revenue that comes of people that fail to follow safety protocol. Traffic cameras have a characteristic that everyone is aware of, safety. Safety is the most important part, the traffic cameras leave officers free of stop light duties to emphasize more of their focus onto neighborhoods and other parts of a city. Traffic cameras are notorious for saving the lives of many people and reducing accidents, just in 2013, Insurance institute for highway safety has a study that showed a 24 percent decrease in red light accidents in larger cities. Cities have been af...
His reasoning for this project is connected to the safety and he believes that his light prevents accidents. However, he doesn’t present any statistics or data to support that the visibility of traffic signs or traffic lights really causes traffic accident.
Traffic Control System was then and is now operating on World War II era technology with most
Then, there is the safety factor. Yes you should always be ready to stop in case the light changes but, occasionally you are in the zone where you cannot safely do that. If the light turns yellow and you are
Cameras used at traffic lights are able to monitor the roads to benefit those driving (Li). Those who monitor it will be able to notify the police.
This concludes that thousands of vehicular accidents occur annually because motorists fail to stop at stop signs/red lights, and they crash into another vehicle by doing so. Sadly, one careless person's negligence can result in a fatality or grave injury, and for this reason red-light cameras should be reinstalled. “According to retired Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles employee Brenton Zimmerman, “This study concludes that red-light cameras reduce fatal collisions and determines the effect that abolishing this technology has on public safety. People are more inclined to drive safe when under surveillance.” Opponents argue that red-light cameras cause yellow light durations to be shortened. In doing so, it makes motorist run red
Traffic control establishes a set of rules and regulations that people rely on to help avoid collisions and other hazards. With almost 160 million motorists and 3.8 million miles of public roads in the United States, traffic control on the highways is an important aspect of daily life. Without the control of speed there would be more fatalities than we already have now. Speed limits should be obeyed. A motorist going too slow could cause an accident. When everyone is traveling at the speed limit, a car comes up going 40 mph; if you break everyone will, too, perhaps causing a collision. Motorists depend on traffic control to avoid collisions and travel safely to their destination.
Traffic engineers and planners need information about traffic. They need information to design and manage road and traffic system. They use the information for planning and designing traffic facilities, selecting geometric standards, economic analysis and determination of priorities. They use this to justify warrant of traffic control devices such as signs, traffic signals, pavement markings, school and pedestrian crossings. The also use this information to study the effectiveness of introduced schemes, diagnosing given situations and finding appropriate solutions, forecasting the effects of projected strategies, calibrating and validating traffic models.
“Each light has a different preset wavelength designed to detect hair, fibers, and body fluids at crime scenes, these lights allow a crime scene to be processed faster and more thoroughly than ever before.” This technology is speedy and can help locate the whereabouts of criminals. The use of in-car camera systems has become very popular, especially by law enforcement. These cameras are used to record traffic stops and road violations of civilians. “From the time the first in-car cameras were installed to document roadside impaired-driving sobriety tests, the cameras have captured both intended and unintended video footage that has established their value. Most video recordings have resulted in convictions; many provide an expedited means to resolve citizen complaints, exonerate officers from accusations, and serve as police training videos.” Photo enforcement systems helps to maintain road safety by “automatically generating red light violations and/or speeding summons and as a result to greatly improve safety for the motoring public.” (Schultz,
The primary point of traffic laws is safety, but also keeping order. Following traffic laws is one of the most essential aspects of driving and can increase your safety as well as of the people around you. Knowing the traffic rules in our region and applying them can prevent us from getting involved in an car accident and save us the pain and costs of a traffic ticket due to a violation. If we didn’t have any traffic laws there would be chaos on the roads and many disasters could happen.
Traffic congestion, is one of the major problems faced in the capitals and major cities in most countries. As with the increase in the growth rate, comes the growing demand for the use of transportation. This works with the response to the needs of the community.
