The American family, many believe to be a myth but to some Americans it is a dream that they wish to achieve in their lifespan. The American family can be defined as a husband and wife living in the suburbs with their two children and dog in a house behind a white fence. Many Americans want to achieve this dream, living happily ever after with the one they love. The American family dream is detrimental to Americans because it is exclusive and does not apply to most Americans such as women in the working field.
The American family was highlighted in the 1950’s and era when the man was the breadwinner, decision maker, and everyone else in the family took a back seat. Many people in the world today do not want the old standards of the American family to exist anymore because women did not have many decision making opportunities. Today women strive to do better, to make a difference in the world. Many men believe that women should stay at home and take care of the children. Which is in no case a bad thing; however, it is not a bad thing for a woman to be the breadwinner in the marriage and to have a dream and ambition as well. We have grown up in a society where the standards of the American family are to keep the man strong and masculine and keep the women needy and boxed in.
