In Tovani’s Chapter 9, “Did I Miss Anything? Did I Miss Everything?” Last Thoughts, she concentrates on explaining the importance of teachers focusing on their learning to be in touch with students’ learning. Tovani opens the chapter with a story about a time she felt stressed out about what to teach, and how she established that she should take the advice she gives to her students. Throughout the chapter, Tovani proceeds with the importance of realizing as educators that giving students the opportunity to think should be supplied every day. To conclude, Tovani writes that every teacher should follow their instinct of what is right for their students because they have the essential tools.

The first chapter in the book At The Dark End of the Street is titled “They’d Kill Me If I Told.” Rosa Park’s dad James McCauley was a expert stonemason and barrel-chested builder. Louisa McCauley was Rosa Park’s grandmother, she was homestead and her husband and oldest son built homes throughout Alabama’s Black Belt. In 1912 James McCauley went to go hear his brother-in-law preach. While there, he noticed a beautiful light named Leona Edwards. She was the daughter of Rose Percival and Sylvester Edwards. Sylvester was a mistreated slave who learned to hate white people. Leona and James McCauley got married a couple months after meeting and Rosa was conceived about nine months after the wedding. I learned many things about Philip Caputo and his tour of duty. He described how he felt in the beginning about the Vietnamese people, which was not as much hate since him and the other soldiers were not as knowledgeable about all the conflict that was taking place in Vietnam. Caputo was very opinionated towards his views of the Vietnamese people. He actually felt sorry for all the villagers who had to see and deal with the negative environment that was brought upon them, and bear the Marines who probed their homes for prohibited Viet Cong relations. Caputo did not find it fair how the American troops mistreated the villagers and protected the concept of apprehending the Viet Cong. However, throughout the end of his tour, he and his men disliked the VC very strongly, learned how to hate and wanted to kill them.
In reading this chapter I came to acknowledge a lot facts that I didn’t realize about the British Zulu war. The battle at Rorke’s drift, and the battle at Isandhlwana are the chapter main focus in book Carnage and Culture. It gave multitudes of information that went well in detail about the battles. After reading the chapter, and researching the information on the war, and comparing the information presented by Victor Davis Hanson I found the information insightful and correct. He backs up his statements with facts and explains how western military forces were so dominate because of tactics, discipline and technology.
The novel, 'Heroes' is written by Robert Cormier and was published in 1998. It is set in Frenchtown, America, between 1940 and 1945, during the Second World War and explores the themes of guilt, compassion and heroism. It is about Francis Cassavant, who desires revenge from his relationship with his friend Larry LaSalle. The plot creates tension and suspense and explores how and why Francis has returned from the Second World War to kill Larry.
Psychedelic drugs were an icon of the 1960s, its role embedded within the rising counterculture in response to the economic, social, and political turmoil throughout the United States. As a means to impose a central power and control social order, federal authorities were quick to ban the recreational and medical use of psychedelic drugs without consideration of its potential benefits. The recent state laws on the legalization of marijuana in Oregon and Colorado with others soon to follow, is a sure sign of an eventual collective shift in the perceptions of psychedelic drugs. Not only does Daniel Pinchbeck document his reflections on the personal consumption of psychedelic drugs in his unconventional novel Breaking Open the Head, he also advances several assertions on modern Western society in his exploration of polarized attitudes on this controversial topic.
Paulo Freire questions the theory that education is just a basic process consisting of just teaching between a student and teacher in Pedagogy of Hope. The text elaborates on the multiple components of teaching. Freire makes a valid point that the teaching style is an imperative factor in whether the student is able to comprehend the material. He lists four types of teaching styles. The first, authoritarian, the teacher is dispassionate to any input from the student. The second, permissive, allows the student full control of their learning with little to no teacher input. The third, intellectualism, is where the teacher is enamored and overwhelmed by the content of the teaching. The most important of the styles to Freire is dialogic/dialectic, engaging both the student and teacher in the content taught. This style is imperative to the students of today’s society because of the need to be free thinkers able to analyze critically and dialogic/dialectic is the only style with the capabilities to influence the mind.
Teachers help us expand and open our mind by giving us skills throughout students’ early life to help students when they are older. By learning information from teachers, students become better people, in a couple of ways. Besides inquiring knowledge from their teachers, students learn to work with one another, open their mind to other peoples’ thoughts and ideas, respect one another, and learn different techniques for life’s issues.
Cedric highschool fail to provide him with an excellent education in many ways. Cedric is a student at Ballou high school in the Southeast of neighborhood of washington D.C. According to “A Hope In The Unseen” Cedric strives for high grades and hope to attend a top university. At Ballou Cedric has almost no friends. As he gets on through school and throughout the day he ask for more and more work to keep himself busy. Also more known as being on top of things that are important to him. According to chapter one it states that “ Cedric like some other math and science applied to the program and arrived a year early to Ballou”. This quote show that he really wanted to get accepted and it shows how much he is into school.
When discussing the roles of teachers, the saying “With great power, comes great responsibility,” comes to mind. This quote is famously known to be in the Spiderman movies, but in addition to this, it also applies to instructors. These authorities have an underestimated job to fulfill in society, and that is ensuring that the children are well taught and succeed. In the essay Of The Education of Children, Michel de Montaigne touches upon a crucial point that can be found within the flaws of today’s educational system. Throughout history, while the curriculum is being altered, the method in which it is taught is not. Montaigne states that bookish learning is an inadequate way of learning. It is good start, but a foundation should not be built based on it. He then goes on to say, “A sentence pressed within the harmony of verse darts out more briskly upon understanding, “ (Montaigne 1). This is a principle that should be focused on to help guide educational practices. Nowadays, children have a shocking amount of access to electronics, which has shortened their attention spans – an issue that was not present 100 years ago.
In the traditional approach to teaching, the teachers are sole source of knowledge. They decide what the learners need to know and communicate that knowledge from books and from their own experience. In addition, they tell the learner how to learn the materials, and decide on a way to test the learners’ understanding of the subject. The responsibility of the learner is to absorb all of these materials and then demonstrate their understanding in the manner indicated by the teachers. Along these two weeks we have been prompt to make a recall to our own way of learning and why we became a teacher: Was it because coincidence, due to life circumstances, maybe because family tradition, was it a conscious decision or because someone influenced us? Whatever the answer is, we have to face reality and be conscious that being a teacher does not only means to teach a lesson and asses students learning. It requires playing the different roles a teacher must perform whenever is needed and required by our learners, identify our pupils needs and preferences, respecting their integrity and individuality but influencing and motivating them to improve themselves and become independent.
In this course I experienced an important change in my beliefs about teaching; I came to understand that there are many different theories and methods that can be tailored to suit the teacher and the needs of the student. The readings, especially those from Lyons, G., Ford, M., & Arthur-Kelly, M. (2011), Groundwater-Smith, S., Ewing, R., & Le Cornu, R. (2007), and Whitton, D., Barker, K., Nosworthy, M., Sinclair, C., Nanlohy, P. (2010), have helped me to understand this in particular. In composing my essay about teaching methods and other themes, my learning was solidified, my knowledge deepened by my research and my writing skills honed.
