Thoroughness is foundational to legal investigators because we owe an ethical duty to our clients to gather information to the best of our ability and pose a professional liability to our attorneys if we do not do so in a careful, deliberate and procedurally correct way. For example, we might be able to obtain a helpful piece of evidence, even through legitimate means, but if we fail to chronicle every step of obtaining and logging that evidence to create a chain of custody, we may still fail our client by ruining its ability to be authenticated. Being thorough in the planning phase of exactly what you will be investigating, how you will collect it, who or what you will need for authentication, and what factors the opposing side might be considering
