After reading the short story titled The Lesson, authored by Toni Cade Bambara in 1972, I interpreted this as, without a major outside influence, it will be very difficult for a child to become successful if they are born into a poor family. It is not impossible to be successful because there have been people such as Oprah Winfrey and Steve Harvey that have proved this, however, it is a more difficult path. There are factors such as single parenting, high crime rates, and social influences that impact these outcomes. First, we will discuss the impact of children who are raised with a single parent. It is common for children in poor neighborhoods to only have one parental adult caring for them. More is looking from the outside in and starts talking to them about money and how poor they are. The narrator states, “So we are heading down the street and she’s boring us silly about what things cost and what our parents make and how much goes for rent and how money ain’t divided up right in this country. And then she gets to the part about we all poor and live in the slums, which I don’t feature.” When you have been raised in an area for such a long time, it becomes a norm to be poor and you fail to see what the actual perception is. When Ms. Moore came into the picture and began telling the kids that they were poor and lived in the slum, they did not want to believe it. In summary, being raised in a poor neighborhood, with little resources, does not mean that a person cannot be successful. People such as Oprah Winfrey, who came from a very harsh childhood, rose to be one of the most successful women in America. Steve Harvey, who mentioned in one of his motivational speeches that he lived homeless in a car, turned out to be one of the most successful comedians and hosted a famous talk
