An Evaluation Essay on TOMS Shoes (Final Draft)
There are two important factors that people consider when they want to buy shoes, design and quality. However, there are two more factors that TOMS shoes consumers keep in mind, caring for nature and being benevolent. TOMS is an American brand of shoes, eyeglasses, and accessories that was founded in 2006 in Playa Del Ray, California. The founder of TOMS is Blake Mycoskie, a tech entrepreneur from Texas. The shoes’ design follows the alpargata, a casual, flat, yet sometimes high-heeled shoes that originated in the Pyrenees (“TOMS Shoes”). The idea of producing alpargata shoes came to Mycoskie when he traveled to Argentina and saw most Argentineans wearing this kind of shoes. When he went back to the United States, he decided to apply the alpargata design and initiate TOMS. The basic materials of TOMS shoes are canvas, rubber, dye, and pig suede.

The price of a pair of TOMS shoes is not high. For example, a pair of classic shoes is around $55; therefore, from my point of view, considering the amount of money that someone spends on TOMS shoes, he or she can enjoy a high-quality product.
Eco-friendly Materials
TOMS is committed to applying eco-friendly materials in its products when possible, and they call this program “Vegan.” For instance, it uses post-consumer waste—materials that have been used and diverted or recovered—to decrease the waste in our habitat. Also, TOMS produces its shoes’ boxes with post-consumer waste and prints them with soy inks, which are made from soybeans.
However, TOMS applies ethylene vinyl acetate, EVA, in its shoes’ bases. It is important to mention that exposure to EVA could result in health problems such as irritation of the eyes, nose, throat, and lungs. Also, it can affect the immune and nervous system (“Department of Health and Human Services”).

Founders Terry Armstrong and Lew Hayden ventured out together in 1967 to revolutionize the game of shoemaking by trying to construct the most comfortable shoe in the world. The co-founders determinately fulfilled their long-term goal when San Antonio Shoemakers in San Antonio, Texas was revealed. San Antonio Shoemakers [SAS] is a North American based shoe manufacturer that specializes in quality and comfort shoes. SAS is a family owned enterprise that has been operating successfully for well over 40+ years. SAS takes pride in its products being made exclusively in the United States of America and claims they do not outsource their production. (CITATION) In the beginning, Terry and Lew wanted to build a shoe that speaks for itself in terms of excellence and absolute comfort, so they relied solely on word-of-mouth advertising. 1. Is the international market arena in which your athletic footwear company competes characterized by multicountry competition or global competition? Explain why.
The design and sale of running shoes is an international business with companies such as Nike and Adidas being the leaders of it. The success of these firms is attributed to the fact that they take into consideration the diversity of the runners’ feet in the design stage of their production. Their customers regularly look for shoes that fit well but are flexible at the same time. In other words, the shoes should be as light and comfortable as possible. These companies produce a broad range of running shoes depending on a person’s weight, Gait & posture, and stride habits. The varieties of shoes produced are also created for different topographies, distances, ground hardness and weather. Light

Shoes began with simple designs and materials, because they were generally worn for protection by those who were able to create or afford them. “The simplest way to protect feet was to grab what was handy- bark, large leaves and grass- and tie them under the foot with vines” (“The History of Shoes”). Looking further into the future, the Romans developed more styles of sandals like the military sandal called the caliga. This open-toed shoes consisted of “a lattice- patterned upper, front lacing and a heavily nailed sole.” Britain saw what the Romans were wearing and based their styles off of this as well, although they went with a closed-toe design because of their colder weather patterns (“The History of Shoes”). Footwear from this time period is difficult to locate, so most of the information comes from looking at paintings, sculptures, and other artifacts that were left behind by the people of that time period (Krick). Even in the early years of civilization, shoes changed as new ideas and materials were developed.

The very first pair of shoes was created many years ago. Its purpose was to protect the feet from rocks and debris and also to provide warmth. It was created in a very simple form. People used to make shoes by wrapping their feet in dried grasses, straws, cowhide and leathers. Later on, pieces were developed from an oval piece of leather which was bound by a piece of strong leather strings. This may have looked like one of today’s sandal...
In reviewing the case of New Balance Athletic Shoe, Inc. it is clear that there are a few major problems that the company is facing. First of all, New Balance falls behind its other major competitors, Nike, Adidas and Reebok, in the area of marketing. Unlike its competitors, New Balance does not undertake celebrity endorsements. This puts them at a disadvantage when it comes to brand building. This also causes the company to lose out somewhat on gaining awareness on a global scale as it lacks endorsements in major sporting events. Most global brand names generate strong brand recognition through celebrity endorsements in sporting events that would give them the needed momentum to carry their brand name further into the global market.
Most people in the world gratefully have the chance to make their own choices and decisions every day. One of those choices and decisions that they make is what they are going to put on their feet for the day. Unknowingly the decision of what type of shoe a person wears for a specific day will affect their entire day. There are also many factors that contribute to what type or style of shoes a person buys or wears such as economic status, design, usefulness, and popularity. As of today, there are various types of shoes which are sandals, heels, boots and athletic and casual shoes.
