Toyo-o’s brother seems to represent many qualities of a good man. He makes the final decisions of the household, holding his judgment’s above that of even his mothers. He takes responsibility for his family business, and is able to take care of his family from his work. The women aren’t mentioned to take much part in the business, so it’s assumed to be mostly the man’s responsibility. These are qualities that Toyo-o seems to lack, which mostly seem to be qualities that are meant to keep men away from any feminine qualities so that they can hold power over them. This lack of such power is the reason why Toyo-o was so susceptible to Manago’s, or a woman’s, power.
Clashing swords, miraculous survivals, pain of loss, and heroic sacrifice are all terrifying yet thrilling moments in a battle. The strong possibility of death and the frailty of human life add into the suspense of battle. Yet the reasons behind the wars, death, and suspense can be overlooked. The stories behind the warriors who have died will not be told again, but the stories of warriors still alive are what give the men strength to continue fighting against impossible odds. Ultimately, the reason of why a man would risk his life in battle is for someone, or something, he loves. Like in Gilgamesh and the Iliad, women help encourage and influence the protagonists to be the heroes and protectors they are meant to be.
Nowadays, women are not just seen as nurses or lovers in war stories. They are soldiers, captains, and lieutenants. Women do not have it anymore easier in war than men do. They are not handed medals or become heroes painlessly. Although O’Brien respects women having stronger souls than credited, he still believes they must earn the characteristic of being a hero

Women who fought in battle are not an uncommon concept. There are stories from ancient history that shows that a woman participating in battle was not completely forbidden. The Amazons were a mythic race of warrior women who appear in Greek texts. They are even mentioned in several of Homer’s epic poems. These women were the antithesis of the typical Greek woman; they practiced archery and swordplay, and they lived away from civilized society. It is a common theme for the Amazons to be subjugated and dominated by men, and scholars view this theme as the evolution from matriarchy to patriarchy (Reinhard).

Responsible for being the cornerstone of Polynesian culture, the Hokulea has evolved over many years and has helped revive a heritage that was almost lost.

Because during the Meiji restoration the men of the household were losing their power because of Japan going the transitions of industrialization and urbanization. This can be portrayed in the story that women have the power to make their own decisions. But also in today day and age, storytelling has become less and less common though out Japan. Many people would settle to the city to raise families, being separated from the influences and the constant storying telling of the old tales, because they were be to busy taking care of the children and going to
