In Hero by Mike Lupica, Tom Harriman has died in a mysterious plane crash in which the facts just do not add up, Zach Harriman, his son, is determined to find the truth about his father’s death. There is one more small factor; Zach is starting to have powers, indescribable powers, he is able to cross great distances in almost no time at all, he has unimaginable strength. Throughout the story, Zach has to learn even the people that he believed were closest to him, people he considered family, he can no longer trust. The six most important people in Zach’s life are Alba, the house’s caretaker, Zach’s mother, his father, Alba’s daughter Kate, his Uncle John, and Mr. Herbert, who teaches him how to use his newfound powers to fight “the bads” who …show more content…
Zach always thought of as made up characters his father talked about also, Mr. Herbert seems to be showing up everywhere. Lupica uses the value of trust and an incredible ending to bring this beautifully written story together. The value of trust is a key factor all through the book because once Zach’s powers begin to develop, everyone wants to be a part of his future, especially his Uncle John and Mr. Herbert. However, after Zach and his Uncle John go and walk around New York for one of their “knockaround days” they run into a giant, this man’s “features were distorted, almost like he was wearing a mask. His hands alone were the size of basketballs.”(Lupica, 164) After his Uncle John charges the man, trying to protect Zach, Zach tries to fight the giant by delivering several blows to the face of the mammoth man, just to be simply swept away and left unconscious. After Zach wakes in the hospital one of his first visitors is Mr Herbert. Mr. Herbert talks to Zach about not getting too far ahead of himself, only fighting the battles he believes he can win. Soon after this Uncle John comes into Zach’s room immediately asking, ““what did he want?””(Lupica, 177). Zach is caught off guard by this sudden question and soon realizes that Uncle John wants to know about his conversation with Mr. Herbert. Uncle John describes Mr. Herbert as, “someone to be feared”. (Lupica, 178) After Uncle John leaves the hospital, Zach is completely unsure of who to trust, his Uncle John who he has known for his entire life or Mr. Herbert, someone who he just met but obviously knows a lot about Zach and his past. Considering how these two characters act, Mr Herbert and Uncle John, Zach’s decision is made much easier, after an event that will change his life forever. The way that Zach finally realizes who to trust is within the ending, when all of the facts finally add up.
Zach’s mom is a heavy supporter of Senator Bob Kerrigan being president, this is because, before Tom Harriman’s death, Senator Kerrigan had picked Tom as his running mate. Senator Kerrigan decides to have a massive speech in Central Park, bringing in thousands of people. Just as Senator Kerrigan begins to talk Zach’s eyes fall onto a man on the roof of the building, holding a gun, “The gun taking dead aim at the man who’d just been introduced as the next president of the United States.”. (Lupica, 274) As quickly as the man pulls the trigger on the gun, Zach tackles the Senator, as the bullet rips through the canvas backdrop exactly where the Senator was standing only a second ago. As Zach starts to rise, then he is the one being tackled and he hears, “”Down Zacman!”” This is old Mr. Herbert, protecting him from the second bullet that ends up lodged in Mr. Herbert’s midsection, then as soon as he appeared, Mr. Herbert is gone. After a small search Zach finds Mr. Herbert sitting up against a tree bleeding heavily, Zach begins to call for help but Mr. Herbert refuses, he says, “”Let me die in peace,” “With my grandson next to me.”” This news of his newly found grandfather shocks Zach into silence, he had always thought that his father was an orphan. After this shocking news, Zach rushes home to his apartment only to find his Uncle John who greets him proudly calling him, “”The hero of the day!”” Zach simply replies with “”He’s dead”” (Lupica, 284) As both men begin to argue, Zack discovers that his Uncle John is the one that killed his father, brought down the plane. Uncle John then tries to defend himself by saying, “”I know these people. [The Bads] You don’t know what power they have. The way you can’t even begin to know the powers you’re going to have.””(Lupica, 288) After this comment, when Zach finally decides who he should trust, who really cares for him,
he smiles, looks his Uncle in the eyes, and says, “”Bring it,””.( Lupica, 284) From this point on Zach would remember Mr. Herbert as the man who truly believed in him. Lupica used the value of trust to display how much it matters to have people in your life that you can trust with one hundred percent of your heart, knowing that you can talk to this person whenever you need them, and that everything that they say to you will benefit you in the future, even if this news seems impossible. Lupica finishes the book in a dramatic fashion that draws the reader in with the assassination attempt then crushes them by revealing Tom Harriman’s true killer. Overall I would recommend this book to anyone who enjoys reading books with intense plots.

A hit was put out on Taylor and Zavala by leaders of the Mexican drug cartel because they were becoming a nuisance. This hit was carried out by the same Latino gang members who had previously done a drive-by shooting of a rival gang. The officers were enticed towards their imminent deaths with a car chase which was set up by the Latino gang members. This chase led them towards an apartment complex which was rigged with many gang members and artillery to ensure that neither Taylor nor Zavala would survive. The two were ambushed, but decided that gunning their way out was their best option.
Now here is a brief summary of the book the president has been shot. First, the book tells you about John F.
A hero puts other people before themselves and is admired for their qualities, courage, and achievements. A hero obtains knowledge throughout their journey of helping and healing. From Mark Twain's The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, Huckleberry begins his journey with his first dilemma to save a slave, Jim. Huckleberry Finn begins to transform into a courageous hero when he learns the value of a human being.
Many would agree that although there are many stories about heroes, they all seem similar in some way. Joseph Campbell wrote many books about this theory of a "hero cycle" that every hero story follows. In Sir Gawain and the Green Knight, this pattern is clearly exemplified and it shows the numerous steps in Joseph Campbell's idea of the hero cycle.
A hero ventures forth from the world of common day into a region of supernatural

A man carrying two revolvers and two 9mm semi-automatic handguns calmly strode into the Dunblane Primary School. Two people quickly spotted the firearms and tried to tackle the man; he shot them and left them wounded as he continued his journey down the hall of the school. Finally, the man reached his destination: the gym, where a class a kindergartners were having P.E. In the gym, he pulled out the guns and started picking off the five-year-olds one by one. The room was splattered with blood as young children broke like porcelain dolls under the power of the gun. The blood continued to flow, but the intruder did not stop; he took careful aim to make sure he didn't miss. The final insult came when he shot the teacher who was shielding kids with her body. Once he killed her, he killed the kids she was protecting. When he finished in the gym , he turned around walked out, shot at a class as he walked down the hall and walked out into the courtyard. In the courtyard, the killer ended the ordeal by taking his own life (Pederson).
A tragic hero is an individual who possesses a fatal flaw in their character that will bring about their own destruction or suffering. Aristotle believed that “A man doesn't become a hero until he can see the root of his own downfall. (Aristotle #1)” This Ancient Greek philosopher also believed that each tragic hero has four characteristics. The first of these characteristics is that a tragic hero is born with either wisdom or high integrity, and in some cases both. Aristotle’s second characteristic is that they contain a fatal flaw in their character that may cause them to behave irrationally. The penultimate characteristic is that each hero will suffer a turnabout of fortune brought about by their own flaw in character. Finally, the last characteristic is that the tragic hero will find out that their own turnabout of fortune was brought about by their own actions. McCandless in into the wild is the ideal tragic hero mentioned by Aristotle. McCandless had everything in the world but he gave it up to live in the wilderness and through his own actions he paid the ultimate price. McCandless is seen by the world as a young man who left the corrupted society to embrace a journey only a few would dare. “That's what was great about him. He tried. Not many do. (Krakauer 96)” This journey ended up being the best time of his life and the fact that he attempted this wildlife adventure makes him look more like a daring hero than an idiotic teen.
