When the period of the Tokugawa Shogunate began, it revolutionised the world as everybody would know it. Of course, that fact wasn’t known at the time. The period lasted for more tan 250 years. It was a time of more-or-less peace, stability and prosperity for Japan. There was no fear for warfare, townspeople could do more business, and artists can do what they do.
Tokugawa Ieyasu was one of the most powerful people in Japan during the Tokugawa Shogunate period (also known as the Edo Period), after Toyotomi Hideyoshi died in 1598. Tokugawa Ieyasu didn’t like Hideyoshi’s heir, Hideyori, because Tokugawa Ieyasu thought that he deserved the spot as the ruler of Japan. Whilst the battle of Sekigahara was going on during the 1600’s, Ieyasu defeated
...ining power over its subjects. The Tokugawa instead took the wives and children of the shoguns semihostage in Edo to deter powerful families from taking over the Tokugawa. This is the way the Tokugawa handled the problem because they were no outsiders to Japan but they had many enemies within the state. The Tokugawa and Chinese, however, both closely maintained their contact with foreigners, especially in trade. The Chinese established the Canton system which limited the Europeans to trade in only one city and need a guild approval to trade. The Japanese solved this problem of foreign relations through directing all trade traffic to Honshu, a port city under Edo’s direct rule. This was significant because this direction of trade meant the Edo government could collect taxes on the products rather than another daimyo, drawing power and wealth away from rival families.
The establishment of the Japanese archipelago assumed its present shape around 10,000 years ago. Soon after the era known as the Jomon period began and continued for about 8,000 years. Gradually they formed small communities and began to organize their lives communally. Japan can be said to have taken its first steps to nationhood in the Yamato period, which began at the end of the third century AD. During this period, the ancestors of the present Emperor began to bring a number of small estates under unified rule from their bases around what are now Nara and Osaka Prefectures. At the beginning of the seventeenth century, Tokugawa Ieyasu set up a government in Edo (now Tokyo) and the Edo period began. The Tokugawa regime adopted an isolationist policy that lasted for more than 200 years, cutting off exchange with all countries except China and the Netherlands. The age of the Samurai came to and end with the Meiji Restoration of 1868, and a new system of government centered on the Emperor was set up. The new government promoted modernization, adopted Western political, social and economic systems, and stimulated industrial activity. The Diet was inaugurated, and the people began to enjoy limited participation in politics.

Tokugawa Ieyasu was a great samurai fighter and cunning politician. In battle of Sekigahara Tokugawa defeated his major rivals and established Tokugawa government. His headquarter was established in village of Edo away from the imperial families in Kyoto. Ieyasu and successors choose to rule as shoguns, or feudal lords, demanding loyalty from the daimyo and exercising direct control only over their own territorial domains. The people saw the emperor as divine descent of sun goddess Amatersau, however, established the emperor as the ultimate source of political authority and surrounded the imperial throne with thicket of taboos that protected it from usurpation.

Japan in the 14th Century was a time when many influential groups struggled for political and power and military control. Two of these powerful groups were clans of Minamoto and Taira (Allinson 54). These two samurai clans battled for power in a conflict known as the Genpei War (Allinson 54). After a series of intense battles across the central Japanese mainland, the Minamoto Clan finally emerged victorious (Allinson 54). Shortly after defeating the Taira Clan, also known as the Heike Clan, the Minamoto set up a new government in Kyoto the nation’s biggest city at the time and capital (Allinson 54). The new commander under the Minamoto government was shogun Yoritomo (Allinson 54). Yoritomo’s reign was short-lived due to his selfish grab for military power separate of the emperor’s (Allinson 54). This put Japan into political chaos until the early 1200s when the Ashikaga Clan began to gain influence across the island (Allinson 55). Some wanted Ieyasu to be the Shogun and not the child of a peasant that had costs them so many men. Others feared that he was already to powerful. One man saw this as a way to control the company his name was Ishida Mitsunari, he would control the 5 year old and slowly take complete control. The Tokugawa period introduced many changes to Japan. Some of these transformations are represented in woodblock prints created during that time and help researchers and historians to understand the lifestyle of the people; they offer insight and knowledge about specific events. The prints' scenery includes long journeys, everyday tasks, special festivals, and flora and fauna. Events such as the fish market and elaborate celebrations were crucial during the Tokugawa period. The practice of fishing and introduction to fireworks contributed to the economy, entertainment industry, and appreciation of nature.
The Japanese medieval age consists of the Kamakura and Muromachi periods (from approximately 1185 to 1600). During this time, the political power was switching from the imperial family to a militaristic government. In addition, civil wars (from 1156 to 1568) were increasing throughout Japan. This change of centrality in society’s focus from court to warriors shifted the perception and style of Japanese literature.

For about 250 years, Japan was reigned by a shogun from the Tokugawa clan. However, they were weakened in 1858 and overthrown in 1867 by the Meiji regime who cooperated with the Satsuma and Choshu clan. The main reasons are because they were unable to tackle with the foreign powers’intrusion and was blamed for the signing the unequal trade treaties that had inflicted upon Japan. Subsequently, in the year 1867 until 1912, Japan was ruled in the era of Meiji under the the great Emperor Mutsuhito. Accordingly, Meiji era was considered to be the transformation era in Japanese society.
